They wouldn't be able to afford it, would they?

[–] [email protected] 73 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Good point. Qatar is beyond wealthy but North Korea repeatedly has to threaten to nuke people in order to get aid packages.

They have quite a lot of money, particularly in foreign currency slush funds (see Room 39 for example). However the Kim family has the final say in what is government money and what never makes it onto the books.

They could probably afford a FIFA championship. It's admitting they have that kind of money, that would be a huge problem.

I think it depends what you mean by "afford", they might have enough money stashed away to host one time but it's going to seriously take away from their future

NK has never chosen their future or basic needs over useless megaprojects though

They've got loads of slaves they can throw at it, why not?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (3 children)

but what about materials and things that you have to pay for?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Psshhh, just pull a xitter-musk, you don't have to pay if you can avoid it!

North Korea's GDP is on the order of 20 billion per year. Tiny for a country that size, but considering they don't have to spend any of it on their population, that gives them a lot of bribe money.

[–] [email protected] 67 points 1 year ago

And yet mfers still go in mass to these games in countries with extreme human rights issues and throw billions of dollars at merch.

Okay guys, enlighten me. If Nestle is a 10 on the evil scale, what is Fifa?

[–] [email protected] 64 points 1 year ago (1 children)

1/10 cos they would bribe the scale

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago

Nah, get with the times. FIFA only accepts bribes.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If Nestle is a 10 then North Korea is a 12 and FIFA is an 11.5

Letting that many foreigners into North Korea would be a PR disaster for the Country.

[–] ILikeBoobies 16 points 1 year ago

They have a pretty big tourist industry but it would mostly be people from China

Nuke dropped if a western country wins

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 year ago (4 children)

On a side note, what exactly are we censoring on that bottom photos.

Are we just censoring a bomb detonator box or are we censoring something else....

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not even a detonator box. It's a bike pump because he's inflating the massive paint bubble.

So it's a pointless black box.

I wouldn’t so much as think of attending even if it was right in the next town, so okay. Do it. I’ll enjoy reading about what a disaster it was.
