The data point in Iceland about a military base being located here is not correct anymore. There used to be a base at/around Keflavík International Airport, built in WW2 but closed in 2006. Iceland is part of NATO though so there are usually one or two jets from NATO at the airport doing their things. But there's no base there anymore.
Most of the base has been turned into a village on its own, a movie studio, concert venue, university, etc...
I can't wrap my head around the idea of letting some other country's military have bases in your country.
History!? To protect democracy in bad countries, like Japan and Germany. /s

It's explicitly an empire. They had that whole manifest destiny propaganda. They colonized, literally colonized overseas countries. Empire.
