And now that we're not on reddit, can we call it something other than "cake day"? Sounds like straight up neckbearded fedora shit
Showerthoughts
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted, clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts: 1
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- If you feel strongly that you want politics back, please volunteer as a mod.
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.
Can we just not care? Commenting about cake day is the most annoying shit in the world. No one cares
Finally, someone says it. Always hated those endless "happy cake day" replies. Sometimes it was 20 or 30 replies on a single comment of nothing but that cake day nonsense.
yeah, I'm good with that too.
Back when I was a prolific Reddit karma whore (years ago) it was the best way to get free points for doing absolutely nothing. No purpose otherwise.
Hopefully with time we move away from the redditisms. A lot of overlap at the moment. Let's be a new community. Not a mirror of them.
Cultures adapt and shift slowly, but I would love for us to embrace becoming something new instead of trying to recapture what once was.
It will be called poop day?
LEMMINGS MUST GO 3 DAYS WITHOUT POOPING STARTING EACH YEAR ON THEIR POOP DAY
OH NO
Lemmiversary
OR... we could call it a cakeday too and rip this exclusive novelty from Reddit.
We're at war, gentlemen!
please. stop.
No we're not. We're just here now.
Um, I kind of liked it, though... Maybe an option to opt out? I'm fine with renaming it, too. I've always preferred key lime pie or tiramisu for my birthday.
Fediversary?
I am genuinely excited to see how many people stick around post June 30th. If this place stays as vibrant as it has then this is my new home for sure.
When all this API shit started kicking off I didn't really like the look of lemmy, but now it looks like the best. KBin was fun for a bit but felt kind of chaotic, plus not having posts vanish after upvoting/viewing the comments was a death sentene for me. The other alternatives are just shit IMO.
Plus looks like a lot of app devs are lemmyheads, Memmy has been great after installing it today. There's no way i'm using the reddit app post June so yea...Lemmy all the way, cause everything else blows for content consumption.
Kinda gutted to have lost my June 4th cakeday due to fleeing from Beehaw. Getting in before July 1st still makes me cool though, right? Right?! 😭
We will probably give ourselves some grandiose name like "Founders" All the original lemmy people pre-june2023 gonna get called "early Adopters" like lemmy didn't exist for like 3 or more years and they built it.
It's gonna be a big ol' lemmy party around here next summer
We should throw a group party in a year!
My Reddit Cakeday used to be nothing special. It's June 30th. There's a certain irony behind all this somewhere.
I actually might remember mine, because o joined here on the first day of the blackout. June 12th. Quit Reddit after 16 years on the 11th, so it's kinda memorable for me. And the 12th of a different month is my birthday, so that helps.
Mine is June 1st, the first day we heard about the API bullshit. But then Beehaw defederated LW so I had to open an account on LW to follow a couple of communities
I had the same thought this morning! I also wonder if there's a similar phenomenon with older redditors that came from digg. When was that?
According to other comments 12 years ago and yes - it was exactly the same.
At least that's what they say. I missed the digg era, joined reddit 9 years ago.
I hat december the 31st for Eleven years on reddit. Always tried to remember why I created an account on new years eve...
mine was may 4th... you guess why lol
Lonely new years eve, probably found some porn you wanted to save...
Summer Boomers/June Boomers like me.
Hey does anybody know if this community is ran by the same people who ran the subreddit
I think that would be epic if so or is this just a clone
CAKE
My reddit cake day is on April 10th, my birthday. The reason I made an account was because my favorite band was doing an AMA that day.
I think I lasted 2 days and stumbled on sub.rehab, thus my Fediverse adventure began
I know mine will change when I end up building my own insurance. But I had a similar thought
At least it isn't the 11th of September anymore, so I guess that's something. On the other hand I always remembered that it was my cake day.
I don't even remember how it became that in the first place; I usually try to stay away from social media that day and a few days around it.
It's the new boomer generation
We'll be known as the Lemmy Boomer Generation.
Winter for us Aussies.
And you know, the rest of the bottom half of the planet
Having cake days together is better than having a cake day alone I think
