With the stroke of a pen, U.S. President Donald Trump last week put a freeze on projects that have helped Ukraine become freer and more democratic since the earliest days of its independence in 1991.

The White House ordered a 90-day suspension of U.S. foreign aid-funded projects globally, to ascertain if they aligned with "American interests" and "American values."

. . .

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, USAID has provided Ukraine with $2.6 billion in humanitarian aid, $5 billion in development assistance, and more than $30 billion in direct budget support, helping to rebuild schools after Russian attacks, pay for bomb shelters, advanced medical equipment for hospitals and much more.

Yet USAID's support for Ukraine began well before the full-scale invasion and, according to people who have worked on such projects, their work is vital, and their value immeasurable.

In a landmark move reinventing the working week in the United Kingdom, at least 200 British companies have signed up for a permanent four-day working week for all their employees without any loss of pay.

Together, these 200 companies employ over 5,000 people, and among these charities, marketing and technology firms are the best-represented, a report by The Guardian said quoting the 4 Day Week Foundation.

...

The change was first adopted by around 30 marketing, advertising and press relations firms. The suit was followed by 29 charity, NGO, and social care industry-based organisations, and 24 technology, IT and software firms. Later, another 22 companies in the business, consulting and management sectors also joined the bandwagon and permanently offered four-day weeks to staff, according to The Guardian report.

Within the last six months, 93 companies in Ukraine have removed signs of Russian ownership and continue to do business in the country, despite a moratorium on altering the registration of companies with Russian owners, the monitoring service Opendatabot reported.

...

In response to an inquiry from the Kyiv Independent, the Justice Ministry said it had checked all 621 companies and found violations in the registration of 14 companies, two of which were related to non-compliance with restrictions on Russian assets.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich owes up to 1 billion pounds ($1.2 billion) to the U.K. after attempting to evade taxes on hedge funds investments in a scheme involving Chelsea Football Club, according to a joint investigation by the BBC, The Guardian, and The Bureau of Investigative Journalism published on Jan. 29.

...

Abramovich's net worth is estimated to be around $9 billion, and he has Russian, Israeli, and Portuguese citizenship. He and other top Russian oligarchs were sanctioned after the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The oligarch now resides alternatively in Tel Aviv, Istanbul, and Russia's Sochi.

It's just a bad joke about 'the out of the box experience not being great'.

I'm annoyed that the reports seem to be written and redacted to prevent any hint of the companies involved.

It doesn't matter how the electricity is made. Heat pumps are crazy efficient. What matters (for the typical consumer) is how much it costs to heat up the home via traditional methods vs that in the electricity of heat pumps. That said, your toaster, or electric oven/kettle all generate heat at ~98% efficiency with some energy lost as light and due to resistance in the wires. A heat pump transfers heat at well over 100% efficiency. You get more heat energy than it requires in electricity. 💪

Efficiency degrades the colder it gets though which is its only drawback. Some places are too cold and would require deep deep monster backyard installations to work well, but here 'too cold' is ~ -16^o^C.

A side benefit of heat pumps using electricity is that it can be supported with modern green energy tech. Don't want to be dependent on the grid either electrical or gas? Add solar panels to your roof and boom you're good to go (this is obviously reductive).

Edit: I'm talking about direct home heating/cooling solutions. I know nothing about industrial grid energy production. For me the benefits of heat pumps are clear particularly for individual purposes.

Zelenskyy clarified that he does not manage or oversee humanitarian funds or programs tied to US external aid but assured that Ukraine’s critical military needs are being met.

“No new funds shall be obligated for new awards or extensions of existing awards until each proposed new award or extension has been reviewed and approved,” said the memo

Stuff already approved and at least transferred on paper would still be otw and could be the reason for the contradictory statements.

Ah. Even though Moscow is west of the Urals Russia is usually considered Asia afaik. Geography is not my strong suite though so I don't get why other than it isn't fully encompassed within Europe's borders.

The Ural mountains and river are considered to be its eastern border, which is NNE of the Caspian Sea.
