I despise Harper as much as anyone, but is this really a result of his awful policies or more so because he happened to be Prime Minister during the 2008 global economic crisis?

Let's not fall into the same trap as the "Fuck Trudeau" crowd, the PM isn't a supreme all-powerful overlord who has full control of the economy. They don't even have that much direct power over the Canadian economy, let alone global factors like the 2008 recession or the COVID-19 pandemic.

I definitely don't disagree with your point, and while I didn't think from your comment that you'd benefit from a reminder of what kind of person Harper is, some people reading these comments might not be as familiar with him.

It's all too easy to fall into the trap of rehabilitating awful politicians from the past when faced with the new generation of awful politicians. I've seen way too many people, even progressives, yearn for the George W. Bush years in the face of the Trump presidency. Like sure, Trump (or Poilievre) might be worse, but that doesn't mean Bush (or Harper) weren't/aren't awful.

Québec's Harmonium was a force in the '70s prog rock scene, and one of the most popular acts of the decade in their home province. They were pioneers of the prog folk subgenre of progressive rock, incorporating elaborate instrumental sections into their music.

What do you mean, eventually? Outside of Québec with the Bloc, Canada is already for all-intents-and-purposes a two-party system. Most people I know more closely align with NDP or Green platforms. Most people I know still vote Liberal.

It continuously astounds me than the NDP and Greens don't make more noise about electoral reform.

We also share a maritime border with France!

I just noticed that the Beatles modified an animal's name to add a musical term (beat) whereas the Monkees did the opposite, removing "key" from monkey.

Harper's been to Mar-a-Lago for events, he's been on Ben Shapiro's podcast, he's been the face of not one but two PragerU videos.

Harper isn't some more respectable, lost form of conservative from yesteryear. Because those don't actually exist. If Harper were running today instead of 20 years ago he would 100% go by the Trumpist playbook.

You're a hot pepper <3

Maybe it would help if you thought of the faces as hummus, and rub the pepper in everyone's face. Yummy.

If that's the case, I eagerly encourage you to go out in the world and experience more things. You can do better than this. I love you.

BA Johnston is an artist from Hamilton, Ontario known for his satirical songs and energetic live performances. Some songs will be simple acoustic arrangements, as in Canadian Beers or they'll feature synth and drum machines, like I Don't Buy No Government Weed (Still Buying From Steve). Across all tracks, there's BA Johnston's self-deprecating humour and many references to real Canadian culture (like the mention of the camo Alpines in Canadian Beers, this man gets me)

Seriously, if you ever get the chance to see one of his live shows, please do yourself a favour and go! I don't want to share any details because it's best you go in blind. I will say that a BA Johnston show is an unhinged, multi-sensory experience.

Playful as a puppy but smart as a whip, New Brunswick's Motherhood pack deeply conceptual art rock into a delightfully unpretentious package.

Summer is approaching (in the Northern hemisphere, anyways) and while I do still bike in the winter, I'm hyped for the nicer weather to go on more leisure rides rather than just commuting.

However, I'm lacking ideas and inspirations for spots to cycle to, so I was curious where everyone here likes to go on bike rides!

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), 27.9 per cent of New Brunswickers indicated having difficulties with their mental health in 2024. Additionally, Statistics Canada reports that New Brunswick has the third highest suicide rate among all Canadian provinces, with 15.1 deaths per population of 100,000. It is crucial that New Brunswickers have access to timely and effective mental health services.

Unfortunately, in New Brunswick there are limited and inadequate supports for individuals seeking mental health care.

Last week, Premier Susan Holt launched her weekly livestreamed press conferences on her government's tariff "action plan."

New Brunswickers got to know the media room Holt was using — and the image of leadership in crisis — during Blaine Higgs's frequent pandemic briefings, fed into laptop computers and smartphones.

The premier instead adopted the role of therapist-in-chief, pledging to use the weekly briefing to respond to questions sent to her office by anxious, frustrated New Brunswickers.

Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold is stepping down from her municipal role effectively immediately to take on the new responsibility in the Senate. Paulette Thériault will be acting mayor, effective immediately, a statement from the city said.

Elections N.B. said Moncton will have to wait until May 11, 2026, to fill Arnold's vacancy.
