Posted to my blog:

Part of the charm (torture?) of old school D&D is gleaning at hints of play that appear in various nooks and crannies of rulebooks, supplements, and adventures. Here's one that I randomly ran into while reading module X1, "The Isle of Dread".

This was posted to my forums and I thought it was an important enough topic to deserve more attention:

What is this communities (sic) opinion on saving and potentially rehosting (breaking copyright) of RPG blogs, posts, etc. in the potential event of that contents host going down?

I’ve said that as well… the dice are not your friend!

Going live in less than 10 minutes! I'm going to talk about hexcrawls and whatever other topics come up,! I'll also be working on a hexmap as I go! It should be fun if you feel like hoping over and joining in.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read it and I only read this first adventure but I always was impressed with it.

I’m the first video I’ve done in awhile, I talk about about the one to one campaign time to real time that Gygax mentions in the AD&D DMG.

No idea. I hope all is well with him personally.

Saw this posted on Mastodon. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet but it looks intriguing!

I think there's a "safe spaces" element as well. It's not just the system-- the system becomes a shorthand for a whole host of philosophies and genre conventions. Ideally, there'd be all sorts of communities at an atomic level and through federation (or something similar) we would join all the ones that interested us and crosspost things that extend over boundaries or confound the boundaries that we've drawn. That's some of the promise of a Lemmy (or Reddit) but the reality is when end up in walled off silos instead of interconnected gardens.

Hey all,

Earlier today I streamed a look at the updated Tome of Things I from Kobold Press. It’s a nice book with a good variety of creatures, well laid out, and I appreciate the appendices with monsters organized by CR, type, and terrain.

Sly Flourish also updated their blog roll.

Hey all,

Happy Friday! In about 12 minutes, I'll be streaming across YT and other platforms reading stuff from the OSR and greater TTRPG community and chatting about it! Come hop in if you have the time!

I’m looking for an old blog post that had a great visual chart on action types and their potential consequences. Anybody recall anything that might fit the bill? If so, drop me a link!

Interesting! I remember Heavy Gear though I never played it. Thanks for sharing!

I think a lot of things in HP are only half-baked but that’s just me.

We have one inside and it’s surviving but it certainly isn’t thriving. We do give it distilled water though.

So the other element is player expectations. Me— I personally might because I tend to expect those things, having played many TTRPGs. My daughter, who has no such experiential baggage, might not.

Back to HP, I’m not an expert on the lore but, generally, all the wands are interchangeable, right? Other than the three master wands or whatever they’re called. So in that case, a wand, like a mundane tool, might not need stats/mechanics.

Ultimately, it’ll be on you to set up the context and sell the players on the concept to overcome any expectations.

A bummer to read. Dr. Holmes’s material deserved better treatment.

What holds it back in terms of long campaigns?

I thought it might be nice to set up a thread in which we can recommend game systems to one another. What do you like? Why? Give us a quick blurb about a game you like and why you think others might like it. Maybe call out if you think it would be good for absolute beginners or folks new to the OSR/NSR. Oh and the genre too. If this gains some steam, I’ll pin it to the sidebar for easy access.

Milestone! (lemm.ee)

Hey gang, I saw that we’ve got over 175 folks subscribed to the community (small steps for mankind but giant steps for us) and we’re now the third largest community on Lemm.ee!

Welcome aboard everyone! Let’s keep the positivity and good conversation going! I love that folks are initiating new conversations and taking part with excellent comments, links, and discussion!

One thing I have seen a bit of is downvoting. I know it’s probably a foolish errand to even ask this, and with federation, the height of futility, but can we try to use downvotes to express that a topic or comment is inappropriate or out of place and not that we disagree or just don’t like it? Let’s try to rid ourselves of some our bad habits from Reddit and not carry them forward.

That said, I couldn’t be more happy and proud of everyone here for coming in and lending a hand to build this community up in these early days!

Game on!
