Hello. My instance is mindly.social. It used to work fine, but now, when I try to connect, I simply see a Mastodon logo. This is true on both Firefox and Chromium browsers. However, when I use Pachli on my phone, it does connect. I'm not sure what the issue is.

It's not about the leader. The policies come from the membership, presented by delegates at convention. The NDP is all of us. That's the only way the NDP succeeds.

[–] MarkG_108 3 points 1 month ago

Right. It's not about one person. It's about all of us. And it only works if all of us pitch in.

You seem to have missed my point. I recommend watching the following documentary (it's a 4-part documentary, with each part being an hour long):

The Century of the Self

Its focus is primarily Britain and the US, but the underlying message holds true here as well. Ultimately, that message is that without the backing of the people, left wing movements will not succeed. And thinking of it as a "movement" rather than as a "product" is key. You're treating the NDP as a product to be sold (IE, what's being put "on the table" is not enough for you to buy). That's the wrong approach, in my opinion. That viewpoint (of politics being a product to appeal to the public) has led to society slowly but surely moving ever more right.

Supporters need to move away from viewing the NDP as a product that needs a better shine. It's all of us. We're a team. That's the only way the NDP wins.

The NDP has some great policies. And they've had great policies ever since the party was created. So why haven't they won? Why now are they behind the CPC in the polls? I feel the following is the issue:

1.) Right wingers are more team oriented to their political party (IE, the CPC)

I think those who believe in a more individualistic society with less interventionist government are (ironically) more able to collectively get behind their team and donate and volunteer than are those on the left.

So even if the CPC does not exactly mirror an individual right-winger's vision of what they want, they will put that aside and still get behind their team. Thus, donations and volunteering are higher. And this gives the right a huge advantage. It's resulted in society incrementally moving right over the past forty years.

2.) Left wingers are less team oriented

By contrast, left wingers, who believe society should be a more community based collective endeavour rather than a non-interventionist individualistic endeavour, (ironically) sit back as individual arm-chair critics deriding their own team. They treat it as a product outside of themselves that needs a better shine to sell, rather than as a team-based movement toward a more just society. Thus, donations and support are low.

Until left wing people can get over that and instead support their team, there's little hope of success. So, start by joining the NDP and supporting them. That's the ticket forward.

I myself use a bicycle for local travel, and public transit for longer commutes. Musk's overpriced EVs are not the solution to global warming, IMO.

Hmm. Initially I confused this with New Brunswick, where the Liberals are in government. Currently in Nova Scotia, the Liberals are in a battle with the NDP for Official Opposition status. So, it's unlikely they'll become government.

https://338canada.com/ns/polls.htm

I'm curious if the Nova Scotia NDP has made a similar promise. (checks...) Well, seems that the Nova Scotia NDP has not made a commitment to this. That's a shame, but regardless, if I was a Nova Scotia voter, I'd likely vote for the NDP anyway, since they generally seem more left wing than the Liberals.

Anyone know when the Nova Scotia election will happen?

This would be similar to prior acts that put restrictions on cigarette advertising. From the Act:

And whereas Parliament is of the opinion that fossil fuel advertising currently deploys techniques which knowingly mislead the public and fail to disclose the health and environmental harms associated with their use, impeding informed consumer decision-making, undermining public support for effective climate action and delaying the transition to safer, cleaner energy sources;

This Act will be coming up for second reading at some point. So, please write both the PM and your MP in support of this Act.

This change would provide more headroom for them to increase prices

But people would notice that immediately. Listed prices don't include the GST/HST.

The other part of the promise is the following:

Singh says an NDP government will pay the tax cut with an excess profit tax paid by very large corporations that hike their profit margins.

So, it's basically in line with the ethos of "tax the rich and feed the poor." I love it.

In the past, Liberals (under Chretien and then Martin) voted in favour of this resolution. Stephen Harper's government voted against it, and Trudeau's government continues to vote against it.

So, Trudeau is continuing where Harper left off. Liberal Tory same old story.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I did solve this from your suggestions of looking at the keyboard settings (Settings/System/Keyboard). Thanks again. I now have emojis enabled (which I never use, but I like having the option just in case).

Hello. I note that previous versions of the LineageOS Messaging app had support for including emojis. This recent version does not include such an option. The keyboard choices are simply either letters or numbers. Is there a way to once again have this option in the LineageOS Messaging app?

Note, I do not have Google Play Services installed. I rely solely on LineageOS along with some additional f-droid apps (and this is something I have always relied on since I began using LineageOS some years ago, starting with a Nexus 5 -- I now have a Google Pixel 4a running LineageOS 21).

solved: Going to Settings/System/Keyboard allowed me to enable the emoji option.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried that I may have to reinstall if things don't get fixed. But, if so, I do have a backup via Seedvault.

I have a Google Pixel 4a. I have LineageOS on it (codename Sunfish). When I first installed it I got regular updates each week. But now I haven't received one since March 16. Have they stopped releasing these? Do I now have to try and build updates myself?

I still haven't had any luck being able to have a backup which can be restored. I created a backup on a USB stick, which is plugged into the phone via a female USB-A to a male USB-C connector. The phone sees the USB stick. I made a backup here with Seedvault. It acknowledges the backup as having been successfully created ("Last backup: 41 minutes ago"). The USB stick is connected to the phone. Yet, pressing the three-dot menu only gives the options, "Backup now", "Expert settings", and "About". There is no restore option given. Does anyone know how the restore option can be made available?

[edit]

Well, I'll assume that if I reinstall LineageOS on another phone (or on this same phone if I need to), that during the reinstall it'll ask if I wish to restore apps and data from a backup, and if I say "yes", then, with the USB stick attached, I can proceed (provided I have the twelve answer verification code). I'm not going to test this, but I trust it will work if need be. I don't think that once the phone is fully installed, that Seedvault (backup in settings) gives a "restore" option via the three dot menu. I think a restore option is only given when first setting up the phone (or possibly by using the phone dialer app and typing *#*#7378673#*#* ).

Okay, even though the recovery code is verified when I check it, the program does now say: "Backup status: Last backup: Never".

I think creating it first on the phone and then transferring it to a laptop (via MTP) won't work. Despite what the site says, I think these files can't be worked with if they are moved around. Perhaps if I get a cord and directly attach a USB stick, then maybe I'll have some luck. Perhaps the program will see a USB stick or USB storage thing, since it doesn't seem to see a Debian laptop as a place for creating the backup file(s).

Thanks for the answer. However, I'm finding it confusing.

Using the file browser, I deleted the folder .SeedVaultAndroidBackup in my phone. This took two attempts (the first did not fully delete it in the phone, but the second time, I did manage to delete it.)

Previously I had copied this folder onto my laptop (via a USB cable where transfer files with MTP was set). So, I copied it back to my phone from the laptop. I verified this exists, and I checked the recovery code. The recovery code was verified ("your code is correct and will work for restoring your backup.")

But, the site says: "Once you have it ready, click on 'Restore' within the menu you get through the three dots on the top right." I've checked this menu, but that option is not there. Just "Backup now", "Expert settings", "About". No restore option. And "Expert settings" also does not contain this option.

Is there something I have to do to enable this option?

Okay, I have a Google Pixel 4a with LineageOS (sunfish). I followed the instructions given at this site, and created a Seedvault backup.

I had my phone plugged into my laptop via USB, and transfer of files for USB was enabled; so, the laptop could access the phone's files via MTP. However, this was not seen as an option for where the backup was to be created (IE, it did not give the option to create the backup on the hard drive of the laptop via a file transfer with MTP). So, I created it on the phone.

I have since copied that file to my laptop. Specifically, I copied the backup file which was created, that being .SeedVaultAndroidBackup, to my laptop. My laptop runs Debian Linux.

So, a few questions:

1.) will I be able to restore from the backup file, .SeedVaultAndroidBackup, that exists on my laptop? Or will this not work, given that it wasn't originally created there?

2.) if the answer to (1.) is "yes", then will I be able to delete the backup that was made on my phone?

3.) is there a way to create a backup with Seedvault specifically on my laptop, rather than copying the created backup file afterword? I wonder if there was a setting with USB transfer (MTP) that could be adjusted (IE, making the laptop the focus rather than the phone).

I recently bought a Google Pixel 4a. The link from the title outlines that security updates from Google will soon be ending for the Pixel 4a (though there was a surprise update in November, but no further updates are expected).

Yet, in spite of that, I assume that LineageOS security updates will continue for this phone, since for a variety of other older phones they have continued. But, I wonder, how will this be achieved? Is there information on how LineageOS creates and releases security updates for the devices that it supports?

I'm using postmarketOS plasma edge on my Pinephone Pro. The KDE program Kasts (installed from a postmarketOS package) crashed when I tried to run it, so I filed a bug report with them. They suggested that I file this bug directly with postmarketOS. The rationale was:

These kinds of faults tend to happen when a library that Kasts depends on gets updated without Kasts itself getting recompiled. Then you can end up with an instruction that has changed in the underlying lib without Kasts knowing about this, leading to a crash. So, I would think it's simply a matter of recompiling the package.

I'm not sure where the correct place is to file a bug with postmarketOS. If there is another place where I should do so, then do let me know in the comments below. Thanks.
