You could try using Xfwm4 with Cinnamon, and getting a theme that does not contain a title bar.

Example: Border Only XFWM4 theme

This theme displays nothing but a 2px border.

There's very likely a simpler method that doesn't require changing the window manager, but it certainly is an option.

Yeah, but my 13" Air felt much harder to use after the update (I was running the dev beta back in June, but they didn't change the spacing since) because I felt I was getting far less usable space for almost no benefit. They did finally make those damned window buttons bigger though.
