Has Uzbekistan ever qualified for a world cup before? I honestly can't recall but it feels like a first. Congratulations to them.

Thanks for the information. Sad to see this community shut down. Thanks for running the place well.

Many locals probably wouldn't go there even if it were free, given the status of soccer there. Many foreigners don't seem to care enough for this tournament to make a potentially dangerous and definitely expensive trip. Maybe Gianni should give his friends in Qatar a call? They seemed to have great success with their rent-a-fans recently. Or maybe the US could introduce the Hawala system on short notice, forcing their servant class to fill any empty stands in the process.

A deserved win over a weakened Germany side. I wish the Portuguese good luck against Spain or France.

As mentioned, libraries are awesome. I recommend making a habit out of regularly going to the library with your children, even if they can't read yet. At our library they have a large selection of children's books that are meant to be read to children rather than read by them. Start with these and make reading a normal part of your day. When your child asks you to read to them, try to make that possible. This might implant the habit of reading in your children.

This looks great! Do you have a recipe (or at least measurements) for this?

Second this. In my opinion the solution is already there and just waiting to be revived.

Thomas Müller, during his entire career, always just felt like a bloke who just enjoys playing football. It seemed completely coincidental that he was able to do so on the highest level. Had he not been as good, I'm certain he would have had just as much fun playing Sunday League.

I hope that Inter once again defy the odds and lift the trophy. It's been a while and I also don't like the idea of Qatar winning the Champions League. Then again Abu Dhabi already won it recently and I'm likely to see Saudi Arabia win it as well, perhaps even on home turf.

It had been speculated for a while - now it's official: Erik ten Hag will follow Xabi Alonso as head coach at Bayer Leverkusen.

VfB Stuttgart win this year's DFB Pokal. The amazing run of third tier Armenia Bielefeld that led them to the final did not carry them to the title. It remains an amazing achievement nonetheless.

We love making Flammkuchen. It's easy and delicious and - most importantly - my daughter loves it.

Ingredients:

for the dough:

  • 250 g flour
  • 120 g very warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 50 g butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

for the topping:

  • 150 g creme fraiche
  • 200 g thick-cut bacon
  • 1 small/medium onion
  • 100 g gruyère cheese (optional)
  • chives to garnish

Directions:

Start with preheating the oven to its highest setting (about 500°F/250°C).

Make the dough:

In a medium/large mixing bowl stir the flour with salt. Add the olive oil, butter and very warm water (from the tap). Stir with a wooden spoon until roughly combined. Knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment for a couple of minutes until the dough is soft and smooth.

Wrap the dough in plastic foil and set it aside to rest for 20-30 minutes (on the counter).

Assemble the tart:

Prepare the ingredients: cut bacon into small cubes. Cut onions into thin slices and sprinkle them with a pinch of salt (they will soften and not burn in a hot oven). Add the creme fraiche into a small bowl, season it with salt and pepper, and stir until combined.

Roll out the dough very thinly into an oval or rectangular shape and place it on a baking sheet lightly greased with olive oil.

Spread the creme fraiche over the dough leaving some border. Top with bacon and onion slices (if they released some water, squeeze it out). Add the gruyère cheese on top (optional).

Bake the Flammkuchen for about 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Baking time may vary depending on the oven.

To celebrate not playing in Europe next season, Manchester United are now preparing to spend a quarter of the entire spending of La Liga during the last summer transfer window (mind you, Spanish clubs even ended up with a net surplus that window). It sure is fun being a strong but not top 1-2 side in Europe's non English top five leagues.

Stay classy, UEFA...

As always, UEFA can't seem to get even the simplest of things right, like... you know... counting and having a few spares just in case.

You don't see seats flying in a football stadium all that often, yet here we are. What a sad day.

With some jurisdictions categorically recommending that children under a certain age (in the case of Denmark under 13) should not have a tablet or smartphone, what is your opinion on the appropriate age/way to introduce these devices to your children's life? Do you use your own devices together with your children? If so, how and when?

While my own children are still unquestionably too young for tablets or smartphones, I'm already afraid of the social pressure that is likely to arise at an ever younger age when their friends start getting devices.

With the threat of not being allowed to enter the country or potentially even worse fates, are any of you thinking about traveling to the world cup? If so, how are you planning to do so?
