We're definitely due another job that uses scouting gear at least. I'm guessing the second one will be a caster, though I wouldn't be surprised if we just get one new job per expansion going forward.

I don't think it will happen, but I'd love to see the resources that would go into a second new job get applied to the existing jobs and make each of them feel a bit more unique.

Media criticism is welcome here, so long as everyone is respectful. Art is inherently subjective - people are going to like different things for different reasons, and it's okay to say you didn't enjoy something.

I'd discourage low effort discussion though. Instead of saying "Voyager sucks" let's try "Voyager didn't work for me because it was too episodic" (not a criticism I personally have, just an example).

I'd suggest reviewing the posting guidelines in the sidebar, and if anyone gets nasty or you see harassment feel free to file a report or shoot me a DM.

Yeah, the login approval flow needs a bit of work - you just get the spinny if you're denied login for any reason. Should be good to go now!

ULTRAKILL is the most fun I've had with an oldschool FPS in ages. The difficulty ramps up perfectly, it's super approachable for new players, and the skill ceiling for what you can do when you're good is absolutely insane. The soundtrack is also fire.

Clips like this make me want to do another playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdHVt7cTwXc

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Something about the isometric/top-down ARPG genre has never clicked with me, and I really can't figure out why. I've tried torchlight, every diablo (except 4), path of exile - I end up bouncing off of them after a week or so and just lose interest.

It makes even less sense when you consider I can sink 300+ hours into Souls/Elden Ring or Xenoblade... Something about the format just doesn't work for me, I guess.

Wow, those colors look fantastic. I've been debating on getting an airbrushing setup, have any reccomendations?

My HG Aerial is in the mail and I can only hope it comes out looking half this nice.

I'd wager this is in response to the campaign going around to block every blue checkmark. Elon can't let his crowd of sycophants feel like they're being ignored.

I've set up https://possumpat.io/c/gundam, hopefully it'll grow as people move over!

Nothing much in there yet, and I need to set a banner, but it exists!

And, if you help someone register, take a look at all the instances! It's more healthy for the network if everyone isn't siloed on the few larger ones.

Hey everyone! Preston here. As The Possum Patio has already started growing a surprising amount since I set it up last week, I wanted to put some thoughts down on what the instance is right now, where it might be going, and some other general background info.

Background

Like many of you, I am (was?) a longtime user of Reddit - going on 13 years for me. The site was always an excellent time-waster and source of entertainment, but a couple years in I realized what really made reddit special to me were the niche communities. With old school forums generally going defunct over the past 20 years, Reddit was The Place to find discussions on that one weird niche JRPG nobody'd ever heard of, or find a fandom of some show that finished airing years ago. All those niches were what Reddit was to me, and as the site continues down the path of enshittification it'll be sad to see those niche spaces slowly decay over the coming years.

So! Reddit drama aside, the ethos of having niche communities is what I want to focus on for this Lemmy instance. The larger instances have the big umbrella topics already covered - I'm not interested in hosting (or moderating) a politics or general gaming community. I want to curate spaces that get into weird niche topics that I (and maybe you!) care about, spaces that seem to be missing from the larger Fediverse as of right now.

Communities

Right now, The Possum Patio hosts 8 communites:

Currently, new community creation is disabled. Moderating and maintaining communities requires effort and time commitment from volunteers, and for now the only mods are myself and @brycethemilkman.

For now, I'm going to limit the total number of communities we host to around 10 or so. If we continue to grow I'd certainly consider expanding that number.

One last thought on communities - as the general Lemmy/Kbin userbase grows over the next few months, some of our communities might get pretty huge, some might not see much traffic or another "default" community for that topic may crop up elsewhere. Both of those things are good! I don't want to assert sole ownership over these spaces, I'll be happy whatever with whatever instance they find as a home.

Closing/Questions

Thanks for reading my rambling if you made it this far! I'm excited and honestly a bit nervous about the positive reception the instance has gotten - some of you were very flattering in your registration responses. 😊

If there's any questions or concerns you have, throw 'em down in the comments. As mentioned above, I'm open to creating about 2 more communities (maybe more if I really like the ideas) so feel free to suggest some.

-Preston

The structure of the fediverse (lemmy/kbin/mastodon etc) makes it really difficult for alt-right and troll instances to find a meaningful presence.

Truth Social for example is just a mastodon instance, but everyone immediately defederated (blocked) them, so they have no reach. Hateful ideologies want a large audience on which to inflict their bullshit, and the federated model makes it really easy to cut them off.
