you don’t actually need to fit the whole model in RAM at once: the 70b for example “requires” something like 120gb of VRAM, but i’m running it on my 64gb m1 mbp - it just starts to run a bit slower (still very usable; i reckon about a word per 300ms)

it’d be interesting to see (without knowing whether this is actually already the case with most of the models scientists use) a model that looks at the predictions we’ve made, discoveries that have led to changes, and factored in the likely changes to come in the future… it seems our refinement of these models has often been “oops we didn’t think about this source” and it happens pretty regularly
perhaps, but Apples rosetta2 works great with crossover and games. valve just pulled proton out of nowhere: they might just decide to do the same with a hypothetical x86 translation layer
(although i have heard that rosetta is so good because apple made some fundamental additions to the silicone to make it more x86-like so that translation performance didn’t suffer too much, which valve couldn’t do)
