Welcome to Lemmy.ca!

"Lemmy.ca" is so named due to it running the Lemmy software, in the Fediverse, and it's geared toward Canadians, hosted in Canada, and run by Canadians. It is, however, not at all restricted to Canadians, or Canadian culture/topics/etc. All are welcome!

We are run by the non-profit Fedecan and funded entirely by user donations. You can help support us by visiting our donations page.

We have some rules here:

1. No BigotryIncluding racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia.

2. Be CivilArgue in good faith, attack the argument; not the person, and promote a healthy debate. That includes implying violence, threats or wishes of violence and/or death.

3. No PornThis instance is not made to host porn communities. You're free to access porn communities on other instances through your account, but be mindful of Rule 4.

4. Use the NSFW tagUse your common sense: if you wouldn't want this image to show up on your work computer, tag it as such. In comments, use the
spoiler ::: tag for NSFW images, and put a NSFW mention beside links. Do not use NSFW images as your avatar or banner. :::
5. No Ads / SpamThis instance is not there to act as your billboard. If you want to promote your personal work, at least make the effort to be a contributing member of this community. Your account purpose shouldn't be to only advertise, make it natural.

6. Bot accountIf you are the operator of a "bot" account, make sure to flag is as such in the account's settings.

7. Right to privacyDo NOT distribute the personal information of someone else without their consent (aka doxxing). Information that is public domain can be shared, provided it is in good faith.
ex: The official email of an elected official is fair, the private phone number or the real name of a non-public person is NOT.

8. Report abuseThe report function isn't labelled the disagree button. You might not agree with someone, but that doesn't mean what the person says is against the rules. Using it repeately in this fashion will lead to actions being taken against the reporter.

9. ImpersonationDon't make an account with the intent to negatively deceive or defame someone on the fediverse.
ex: Parody of a famous person is okay, submitting outrageous content as appearing like another user, mod or admin isn't.

Kind of a two fold problem. First and most importantly, you press the profile button from the 3 lines menu on left of screen expecting to see your own profile and instead it displays someone else's profile who's not even on the same instance. The second is that now, changing user (I have one on one instance and another on another) goes to profile view rather than the front page or local or all of the instance for the chosen account (it is also of course, displaying the wrong user profile when it does this as well).

Though the choice of incorrect user profile seems to be random, it does settle on the one user and will always display that one. It seems to have selected someone from the lemmy.nsfw instance who likes AI porn in this case. I don't have any accounts on that instance and have never interacted with content they're commenting on lol.

Ottawa should block Donald Trump’s chosen ambassador to Canada until the U.S. president stops questioning Canada’s sovereignty, says one expert.

“We could potentially use (this) as a way of signalling the seriousness with which the Government of Canada is viewing this unwelcome talk,” said University of Victoria international relations professor Will Greaves.

“It is an overt, aggressive policy that (Trump) seems to be shifting his administration to endorse. And if we are remotely serious as a country, we should regard that as a hostile action and embrace a wider array of tools in our response towards it.”

Couldn't find anything besides some small TTRPG communities here and there, no general roleplay hubs. Does anyone know of anything on here? And if not, any recommendations for other platforms that have good roleplay communities? Something that's neither strictly just SFW or NSFW only would be nice, those are very hard to find anywhere.

Article is a summary of der8auer's video. Measurements show 22A/260 watts – nearly half of the card's power draw – going through a single wire heating it up to 150 °C in an open-air test bench.

AUPE vice-president Curtis Jackson however, says the provincial employee union is disappointed by this response.

“These are serious allegations of backroom deals and inappropriate procurement practices,” said Jackson. “This is a scandal, and it’s the biggest one, in my recollection, since Alison Redford was providing her private plane to family members. It’s actually, I would say, even worse.”

He referenced back to the MHCare contract to procure children’s medication from Turkey in 2022, noting that CEO Sam Mraiche was “the fellow who provided luxury box tickets that the Premier and her cabinet ministers used in May 2024,” said Jackson.

While he added that none of these allegations have yet been proven, they have caused a massive break in faith with the union and the provincial government, one that “calls into question literally every decision that this government has made regarding health care over the last year, and that expands into and includes the splintering of health care into independent silos.”

We’ve been hinting that this year is going to be huge, and we’re ready to share why… in two weeks on Feb 25th, at our Framework (2nd Gen) Event! We’re holding this launch event live in San Francisco and streaming to our YouTube channel at 10:30am Pacific that day. You can sign up now to get notified when the stream starts. The last time we held a live launch event was in March 2023, when we unveiled Framework Laptop 16 and two new versions of Framework Laptop 13. It’s been amazing seeing the interest in these products and the incredible ways the community has been using and extending on them. We’ve been heads down working for the last two years on an even bigger set of announcements.

For this event, in addition to bringing in press and partners, we’re opening a pool of invites to the Framework Community to attend the event in person, meet the team, and get hands on with our newest products. If you’re a current Framework fan and are in the San Francisco area (or are able to handle your own travel to us), you can apply to attend in this sign-up form. We expect we’ll see a lot more interest than we have available seats in our venue, so we’ll likely need to downselect from applicants.

We will be opening pre-orders on at least one new item that day, so if you’re in the market for repairable, upgradeable, long-lasting consumer electronics products, you may want to create an account ahead of time to be ready. We’ve scaled up our e-commerce infrastructure massively, but we expect the site will still be under heavy load.

Five years in, we’re confident that we’re on a fast path to achieving our mission to remake consumer electronics. We’re eager to continue supporting and scaling the ecosystems around our current products, and we’re ready to bring this mission and product philosophy to even more of the world, one category at a time. It’s going to be an awesome day, and all of us in the Framework team can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been working on!

For a hint at what we'll be announcing, head to the event page.

This article is deep in "no shit" territory - we've seen lots of chatter about online interference since Trump's first election. The part that's interesting is the call to action

Digital platforms provide unreliable or narrow data on inauthentic behaviour, and they’re not currently required to share any public-interest data with Canadian policy-makers or civil society; combatting online astroturfing will require both increased transparency and platform accountability. Canada should require that these platforms share data with researchers so that the public can understand the prevalence of information threats, and so that policy-makers and civil society can effectively advocate for better digital regulation and platform design.

And the effect of small numbers of users:

We’ve found evidence that very small groups of users are having an outsized impact in online discussions about Canadian elections. In the 2023 Alberta election, just 200 users published 12 per cent of all tweets sent to candidates and political parties. In both the Alberta election and the Toronto mayoral by-election that same year, 50 or fewer users generated over 10 per cent of all abusive content we monitored. These highly active power users (or power abusers) could include high proportions of astroturfers. Regardless of their intentions, granting outsized influence to any very small group of users skews our perceptions of public opinion.
