Yes that would be awesome, as I have pretty much abandoned Reddit.

I was listening to the audio version and as soon as the voice said “stories like this should be behind a pay wall.” I stopped listening.

If they really wanted to do the whole book banning poop they are doing they need to remove every religious text, then they should remove religion from the classroom.

I have given up on a traditional Desktop computer a while ago and moved mostly to my iPad, but if I had the choice now I would be using something with an ARM or RISK5 processor and probably Debian. I am trying to get away from safari but I find a new browser I like but there is always that one thing that pulls me back (usually tab groups). I used to have Wordpress host my domain, it is now hosted by hosthero. I went from a .com to a .ca tld. I use my ISPs email server for professional emails, I however think they are trying to phase out offering email addresses. I used Apple’s hidemy email for signing up for things I now use my domain to create pseudo random email addresses. I host my own Nextcloud and VPN (wireshark) at my home for files I am looking for an off site option as well. I have tried multiple times to use a different Calendar setup with Nextcloud. I am wanting to find a way to download all my iTunes music into my Nextcloud music library but that is going to be tough for the moment, maybe if I really cared I would find a way but not right now. All of my photos are still on Apple’s servers, I do however occasionally get around to backing them up on my Nextcloud. Notes I have not really cared enough to actually move but I should probably move them to Nextcloud, just like reminders. Social media I mostly just use Lemmy (Lemmy.ca) I do use discord, I would drop it in a second if the communities I belong to would as well. I will have to look at AI, I use chatgpt for proof reading and helping me code things. Question for you what is unwatched? I have been thinking about setting up a new device to watch youtube stripped of the ads but that is a little ways off right now. I use youtube for the podcasts I follow but I am thinking of moving my podcast subscriptions to my Nextcloud. I have no regular need for a translator so I do not have one. The first internet thing I changed was my password manager, I use 1Password as it is Canadian, if I where to do it again I would go bitwarden. My online shopping has stopped at Amazon, the occasional time I will buy whatever I need right from Canadian store webpages. I cut my subscription to Amazon prime, Disney+, and AppleTV+. And moved to sailing the high C’s (C, C+, C++). I do not like pirating but it is better than paying the enemy. I use Jackett and the arr apps (sonarr, radarr, have no need for the other ones yet) and then it is just added to Jellyfin. I am considering moving to plex because the Jellyfin app on my AppleTV wants me to pay for a subscription in order to use it all. I much prefer Jellyfin so we will have to see what comes from my decisions on a new media centre.

My Nextcloud is hosted on a 1TB NVMe drive in a raspberry pi 5, my VPN is on a pi 4 booting off of a USB drive, and I sail the high C’s on another pi 5 that hosts my Jellyfin server. On both of my pi 5’s I have pihole working as my DNS so that way I am blocking ads and ad trackers over my LAN. I am considering my options on how to remove my iPhone and iPad backups off of icloud. Maybe I will get my old Mac Pro working again and backing things up there?

I have cut back on my Reddit use substantially, all part of my c/boycottus. I sadly still use youtube so I am curious if there is a factboi community here in Lemmy?

[–] Reannlegge 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This is all good, I know Canada is big on the boycott US but I also know that Europe is not as big into the boycott as we are it is good to see that they are realizing a trip to the US may mean a trip to Al Salvador. Poop is going to go down this summer.

I have written the government of Saskatchewan about this, the NDP have at least pretended to take this seriously. I have no idea if they have or not but they said they were looking into options.

As soon as Trump uttered 51st state, I changed my domain and I changed the host. With this new host I also get my own email addresses. I could change all of my Apple hidemy emails to a .ca domain, I will admit that sure it is a pseudo random email address at my personal domain and the ad market can still track me but I will make it as hard as I can.

Then I use a pihole system to block ads, sure I was doing this before the 51st state stuff but it is more important now as most of the ad market is owned by Google. Wish there was an alternative to youtube though. I am wanting to setup a pi as an alternative to my AppleTV and block youtube ads.

I have cancelled all of my streaming subscriptions and started a gem account. Sure I can watch all of the shows ad free but the occasional time I want to watch the news it is worth the $5 or $6. I am a huge Star Wars fan so it hurt not having a Disney+ subscription for Andor, but I got back into sailing the high C’s. I had worked on a bash script to download the show after each episode, by the end of the series I had it polished and working but figured that was not going to work for all future shows so I broke and just installed the arr apps to use along with jacket to track my shows and movies and download them once they are released.

I could stretch a toothpaste tube out for about three months if I brushed regularly for a little bit more than I could for how much a single month costs of the tabs. It took me a few days to decide I was not going back to tubes though.

I use Ecosia, while I understand it uses the Google and Bing results I am glad to hear they are working with another french company to index the web. I personally use pihole to block the ads but I know it goes against Ecosia’s mission.

Yes I have gotten in to the Arr apps, and I pay for CBC Gem.

Pi-Hole (lemmy.ca)

Once upon a time there was discussion about the DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and how we need to move to a Canadian one. The one passed around was 149.112.121.30, CIRA (protected).

I had said something about going a step further and just using your own via Pi-Hole and Unbound. Someone I do not remember who as that is why I am posting here said yes but the pi still has the DNS server you set it up with, they said they would look into it further at a later date If they did look into it and post something I am truly sorry as I cannot find it.

I have gotten into using less US internet things and I recently got to find out that I needed to figure out my VPN setup a little better. This lead me into a deep valley of infosec and I am trying my darndest to strip things away. Anywho I was looking into something and there was mention of apps possibly falling back to system DNS so I found /etc/resolv.conf where I changed my DNS system on my 3 currently operational pi’s to access DNS like this.

Edit: I fixed some editing and hopefully made the commands more clear

This was bolded (I guess putting the comment marker first in the line makes it bold) but inside of the conf file at /etc/resolv.conf I changed it from,

Generated by NetworkManager

nameserver 9.9.9.9 To

Generated by NetworkManager

nameserver 172.16.1.50 # Primary Pi-hole

nameserver 172.16.1.52 # Secondary Pi-hole

nameserver 149.112.121.30 # Canadian DNS (CIRA Canadian Shield: Protected)

I also needed to add this to the end of /etc/unbound/unbound.conf.d/pi-hole.conf

This is for Canadian and psuedo-Canadian backups.

forward-zone:

name: "."

forward-addr: 149.112.121.10 # CIRA Canadian DNS

forward-addr: 9.9.9.10 # Quad9 Canadian (with filtering)

forward-first: no

I get into computer projects and find ways to one up myself, I wish I could say I crash tested everything the old fashioned way but I have used ChatGPT to crash test things. Only because I do not have a computer with a strong enough graphics card to run a local LLM and breaking one thing could set me back hours or even days.

Getting Money Back (self.buycanadian)
submitted 1 month ago by Reannlegge to c/buycanadian

So someone on here suggested calling Amazon and closing your prime account and getting your whole year back, $109 for me. So I got curious what other services have I just cancelled but maybe I could get money back, turns out if you call Disney+ they will cancel and refund your account I paid through Apple so they will have to do their thing first but hopefully I will get refunded for that. I saw that I was also paying for Trilogy+ but I have cancelled that and have asked Apple to refund that.

Then I thought about what other services have I forgotten about, or are just set to not renew. I had transferred my domain to hosthero so that I could get a .ca address so I thought maybe I should check out wordpress, it has been cancelled but after getting past the dumb artificial intelligence I got a full refund!
