Canadian appliances (self.buycanadian)

I just found this community on Lemmy! Yay! I have been posting a bunch of #BuyCanadian on Mastodon so far. I’ll start posting here as well.

Here is one of my previous posts that I think isn’t discussed much yet. Canadian appliances are a thing. Danby and Salton have small kitchen appliances but there is at least also this:

I am really intrigued by this Canadian appliance brand. I heard Costco sells them too. Does anybody have one of their ranges or fridges? https://uniqueappliances.com/collections/

They wanted a photo so I chose the first one in my photo library.

I have a blog, it is mostly for me to scream into the void, I would like to believe people read it I am however fine if they do not. Since the buy Canadian stuff started happening I moved where my hosting service was, away from Wordpress.com and to hosthero.com then I moved reannlegge.com to reannlegge.ca.

The actual blog has not yet been transferred yet but I now own reannlegge.ca!

I am moving away from my apple services and to another service, unfortunately no Canadian one offered the features I wanted, or at least none that I could find so that has been moved to a service outside of the US.

Leather boots (work and otherwise) (canada-west-boots-factory-outlet.myshopify.com)

Canada West is an internationally recognized brand out of Winnipeg that makes red-wing quality boots for a lower price. They already sell workboots in many stores around the country as well.

They have workboots, western boots, Chelsea boots, and some very nice dress boots as well!

I'm looking for wool socks. Not like your grandma's (I have lots of those) but merino wool knee high socks. I dress a little differently than most men my age and I wear a lot of high socks for multiple reasons. Mostly to stay warm.

Any ideas?

It's a union store too, which is awesome.

We’re a business driven by our shared values that acts to build a better world through cooperation with other likeminded individuals and businesses.

This might be a long shot, but I'll ask anyway.

I used to go through shoes like crazy until I got two pairs of Saucony Excursion trail runners many years ago, and I still use them in rotation but need another pair that I can size up.

Are there any Canadian companies (even if they manufacturer oversea), who have anything like the Excursion? Durability is a top priority, and it has to be all synthetic (no leather). 😬

Just a heads-up, while many of the stuff they sell are actual products of Canada (i.e. grown here, too), a lot of them are only packaged in Canada. They do list the country of origin, so you can easily buy NotAmerican ™️

I don't game much anymore, but Canadian devs shouldn't be ignored.

On mobile, Rebuild 3 is developed in Canada. Of course, Death Road to Canada was dreamed up by abguy from Kitchener Ontario and it kicks ass!

On all major platforms Ubisoft has some awesome games from their Canadian studios like the Farcry series (Ubisoft Montreal & Ubisoft Toronto), Rainbow Six Seige, For Honor, and Watch Dogs.

Dead by Daylight is also developed by a Canadian game studio.

Share your favourite Canadian developers and game studios!

Meta is one of the highest performing American stocks and 98% of their revenue is advertising. Make it harder and strike a blow for Canada!

The guide is easy enough that parents, grandparents and other non tech types should be fine with it.

CBC's funding increases

CBC/Radio-Canada’s funding by the federal government is well below the average funding of G7 countries, which is $62.20 per capita. Currently, the government grants approximately $1.38 billion to CBC/Radio-Canada, which represents approximately $33.66 per capita, thereby placing Canada in sixth place in the Group of Seven (G7) in terms of public funding per capita for its national public broadcaster. The per capita funding that CBC/Radio-Canada receives is therefore equal to approximately half of the G7 average. The Minister intends to bring Canada more into line with its G7 counterparts.

I'd like to move all my business away from Walmart, and their pharmacy is one service we use often.

While I know there are "lesser evils" than Shoppers, they are walking distance away, and that's important to me.

Can anyone share their experience with Shoppers for their pharmacy, and even better would be from anyone who's switched from Walmart Pharmacy to Shoppers.

Thanks in advance.

Update: Thanks for all the input, guys! I ended up going with a local pharmacy. The dispensing fee is about $1 more than Walmart, but they offer free local delivery if I can't get to them, and the person I spoke to was super nice about answering my questions. Sounds like I dodged a bullet by not going with shoppers. LOL

I am looking for a stainless steel insulated bottle. Preferred size is 500 mL.

The nearest store to me sells Hydro Flask.

I would like some other recommendations.

Some of my own research so far: Hydro Flask is owned by Helen of Troy (Nasdaq: HELE). I have come across Klean Kanteen, they seem like a good company but I'd have to ship in because it is not in store.

Ideally I'd like to support a company that is a co-operative or B-corp and not owned by a conglomerate traded on the Nasdaq/NYSE.

Obviously Canadian is preferred if possible.

Unfortunately, there are no Canadian owned and operated search engines (they were all acquired by Americans! Yes really). The next best alternative is Ecosia, which is the only major search engine that actually invests to Canadians' benefit. Ecosia partners with Tree Canada to regenerate Canadian forests.

In Canada, Ecosia’s reforestation project is located within the Acadian Forest and focuses on restoring its historic diversity in areas that have been degraded by centuries of intensive land use.

Video playlist: How Ecosia works.

Ecosia is also B Corp Certified. This means they have changed their by-laws to be mission locked, and are required to consider stakeholders' interests such as employees, customers, and the environment.

Ecosia is a not-for-profit tech company that plants and protects trees. By dedicating 100% of its profits to the planet, Ecosia has planted over 214,229,374 million trees since its founding in December 2009. In addition to trees, Ecosia invests in environmental and social initiatives like regenerative agriculture, renewable energy and community-driven climate projects.

CIRA Canadian Shield

Protect your family with the same advanced technology that protects Canadian organizations—for free. CIRA Canadian Shield double checks to see if websites are malicious and if we know they are, we’ll stop you from visiting them.

The service is completely free, meaning no advertising, no tracking and no reselling your data to others.

Configuration Guide

Three options for your DNS

  1. Private: Offering DNS resolution only
  2. Protected: Adds malware, phishing, botnet and scam protection
  3. Family: Adds pornographic content to the block list

Canadian Shield is available to be set up both for entire networks or on a variety of devices and platforms.

To protect devices while they are connected to your home internet, CIRA recommends setting up CIRA Canadian Shield on your router/gateway as this will protect your whole network.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DNS?The DNS standard is as old as the world-wide-web itself (remember when we called it that!) It is a massively redundant hierarchical system of databases that is used to correlate human readable domain names with the IP addresses of the servers where websites and applications live. It is designed to ensure 100% availability for the Internet’s critical infrastructure. It looks like this:

www.cira.ca –> 52.60.203.65

Most households don’t think about the DNS and stick with whatever their ISP has pre-configured but there are many options available for those that choose to use a different service to handle their queries. The CIRA Canadian Shield is one such option.

If you want to get really deep then please read our resource on how the DNS works or see the full glossary of terms.

How is CIRA Canadian Shield different from a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and will it work with my VPN?

The core benefit of CIRA Canadian Shield is that it blocks malware and phishing using the DNS. While it does offer options for DNS encryption it does not encrypt all traffic and so is not a replacement for those looking for a full VPN.

The exception is for those looking for a mobile VPN specifically for browser-based traffic over HTTP while on public networks. In this instance, the mobile application has an option, called “Secure WiFi” that is a paid upgrade and will encrypt all non-HTTPs traffic when on public WiFi networks.

Please note that if you are using a VPN then the CIRA Canadian Shield will not be providing DNS service, including protection, while you are on the VPN.

Unnecessary BackgroundWell I've begun shopping for a reasonably-priced concert ukulele in anticipation of completing Bernadette Teaches Music's #30dayUKEchallenge. I'm already finding my little soprano (that I bought without research) to be a bit uncomfortably small. After watching a size comparison, I suppose I should have started with a concert instead. But, it will be a good excuse to reward myself for finally sticking with an instrument for an entire program after years of on and off interest. (Recently I've been finding (micro)rewarding progress is helpful with ADHD)

I suppose I should have expected most of the major brands to be USA based since Hawaii was colonized afterall.

Here's a list of Non-USA owned brands that I found in a preliminary search.

  • Ibanez

    • Country of Manufacture: I spy Made in China on all 3 uke models
    • Country of Ownership: Japan
  • Aria

    • Country of Manufacture: China and Indonesia, Japan for platinum line (no ukes)
    • Country of Ownership: Japan
  • Cordoba

    • Country of Manufacture: China
    • Country of Ownership: ~~Spain~~ Japan, owned by Yamaha now
  • Your Local Luthier

    • Country of Manufacture: Canada
    • Country of Ownership: Canada
    • Edit: Added this in for those who can afford it/are skilled enough to justify a handmade one!

Disclaimer: Always check the CoM for a specific model you are interested in if you want to make sure.

Would love suggestions for other quality brands too if you know of any others!

I'm not affiliated with Michaud Toys, I'm just a very happy customer. The craftsmanship is amazing. Prices and delivery costs were very reasonable too ($45 for the board + $15 for delivery to Belleville Ontario). Their website has loads of games michaudtoys.org
