RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

“Everyone will think you’re useless,” my brain tells me, as if every person thinks that way. It thinks I’ll be shunned if I ever need help or can’t do the same things others can. People will think I’m gross and want to stay away from me because this neck brace I have to wear makes me look like some kind of sick, feral creature. I could never get a partner because I would be too much of an economic burden and my chronic conditions take the fun out of everything.

What’s my source for this? My narcissistic father, who always tells me that I’m a useless failure who will never succeed. He told me that people would react in that way. My lived experience refutes many of his claims, but apparently that didn’t stop me from internalizing them. Maybe I should start wearing earplugs around that guy.

I’m getting ready to touch grass for the first time on my own since I become disabled 3 years ago. I know things won’t be easy, but I also know that this kind of self-defeating thinking is more than useless and literally why it took me 3 years to want to go out in the first place.

Maybe I should reject my father’s framing entirely. Why can’t I put a positive spin on it? The world threw a bunch of bullshit at me, and my presence alone is proof that I didn’t give up. I kept going. If people see that as weak, that’s their problem.

I should stand in solidarity with everyone else fighting through their own bullshit and we can help each other in whatever ways we can. Life wasn’t meant to be a singleplayer game. We’re in this together, and I can find like-minded people who recognize that.

I hope my defiant spirit that’s ready to kick some ass and make lots of buddies wins out.

I'm retired so I fill my days doing whatever I want. But I'm always interested in what other people would do if they had more free time.

I got suckered. I saw some posts about how men don't take care of their skin, and how it has more of an effect as we age. So I thought, what's the harm? Let's give it a try!

Welp, after five days of putting a tiny bit of moisturiser on my face, I have a couple of tiny pimples on my nose. I haven't had zits in decades, and here we are. I stopped applying the moisturiser a couple of weeks ago and I'm still getting those zits.

Thanks skincare.

To my brain, nothing is worth pursuing or trying. “How can you guarantee that you’ll be alive to finish anything you start?” My brain asks. And it’s right. I can never make that guarantee.

It directs me to spoil myself with instant gratification because it knows I will still be alive to experience it. There’s no risk of working towards nothing. Don’t make goals. Don’t take risks. Embrace mediocrity. Do the bare minimum needed to survive. That way, you will never be disappointed.

I’m so tired of thinking like this. It started when I got a serious chronic illness that couldn’t be diagnosed. I always manage to survive for longer than I predict, and then I look back and notice that I have done nothing for the last 3 years.

I hope that I don’t continue to make the same mistake in response to Current Events™. I’m sure that falling for it again would be helpful to the exact people I really don’t want to be helping.

What have friends of yours or members of your family chosen for each one? Someone I know is having an event and it has me wondering.

What are y'all's opinions?

I like slatted for the idea of a French cleat system where I can put some shelves or lamps up without taking up floor space. But cloth is also nice for the comfort and it seems more 'bed space' appropriate.

I've seen people using "that's what she said" in a very serious setting, as a way to say "good point/touché". They had no idea it was from the Office.

It’s been nice to see ordinary Americans open up to life in China but everyone is acting blind to their censorship. Makes me thankful for the fediverse and being able to self host my own instance.

Hello, I didn't know where to post this to, which community. I came to Lemmy with the initial reddit migration. I just play video games and smok weed mostly. Lately, the state of the world has me down. And I'm into philosophy.

Basically, in a bunch of recent posts, some deleted by me, others by Mods, and plenty still up.. I thought the term I was trying to explain was called being a Misanthrope.. Someine replied it's called Eco-Fasicm.. I didn't do enough research and started commenting about that.. I'm truly sorry! I felt it sounded wrong eventually and asked an AI called Llama 3.1 what I was really searching for.. It is called "Misanthropic Anti-Natalism". The position that human existence is inherently problematic and that the best solution is for humans to go extinct. This ideology is often based on the idea that humans are a destructive force on the planet, causing harm to other species and the environment, and that our existence is a net negative.

There is a lot more to read on this if you choose to look. Personally, I hope that a bio-phage will be created somewhere with 3d-printers in a science lab using amino acid blocks, synthetic viruses, nano-tech, powered by AI that singularly targets the Human Genome only... Release/Hack it across the planet, Unbelievably contagious.. Most Human pop dead within a week. The straggling Bunker people and billionaires will expire soon after as the air is still death for humans and powered by a defensive AI... Lol sci-fi I know.. but at least more plausible than a Genie's wish for magical extinction...

Misanthropic Anti-Natalists often argue that human beings are driven by Self-Interest, greed, and a desire for power, which leads to exploitation and destruction of other species and the environment. They may also argue that human existence is inherently contradictory to the well-being of other species and the planet as a whole...

Thanks for listening! I'd like other people's ideas on this? I don't believe in God either. Just Thermo-dynamics and Universal Entropy.. the great mixing.
