Is it bad if my soeakers power handling is 25w and i connect it to an amo that outouts 50w? And is it better to connect a speaker with a higher power handling than the amp output or a speaker with a lower power handling than the amo output? It can be hard to match the exact outout wattage with the speakers

Currently designing a DIY retractable screen and sorting out the black border is the last piece of the puzzle. I've settled on Elite Screens A8K screen material which according to them is made with a "PVC flexible" material. I found this ultra black border paint (Screen Goo), but it specifically says it is not recommended on PVC materials. I've also found some marine PVC paints (meant for inflatable boats and the like) which might be the ticket but sourcing may be an issue and obviously finding reviews for this use case is likely impossible. Has anyone had success painting a screen like this? What did you use?

Looking to add an additional sub to my home theater as I am upgrading from 5.1 to 7.2.4 setup. Room dimension is 13x16 and my current sub is the non pro SVS PB-2000. They don't carry the non pro anymore so the only place I can get it now is through places like ebay for $700 after tax+shipping for a used one. Been thinking of just selling my current PB-2000 and grabbing dual RSL Speedwoofer 12s instead and then sell the SVS. Otherwise I can just stick to just the one SVS. Was looking at Rythmik but I'm not sure which of their offering is in line with the SVS and RSL 12s. HSU VTF-2 MK5 are out of stock otherwise might've grabbed those.

This forum has been AMAZINGLY helpful as I begin my mission to create a solid HT setup. Now it's time to ask questions. Feel free to answer in detail. I learn a ton from you all!

THE SPACE:

We're in the US. Near Los Angeles. Our open living room is about 14ft wide x 28ft deep with the couch (MLP) sitting about 10-12ft from the TV and about 15ft or so of space behind the couch where it opens up to the kitchen (so there's no room for bookshelf speakers behind us). Ceilings are about 8ft. Drywall. No acoustic treatment. Harwood floors. We ARE open to in-ceiling speakers.

THE CHAOS:

We have 3 kids and there's always tons of other kids running around all the time. This is not the quiet secluded home theater room. Think Cheaper by the Dozen.

THE SPEAKERS/AVR:

L&R: The house came with 2 x in-wall SpeakerCraft MT6 One speakers on either side of the TV as the L&R speakers (about 6-7ft apart). We have a 77" LG OLED TV. My wife ideally wants to keep our speakers in-wall if possible. Absolutely NO tower speakers.

CENTER: I just found a Kef R2c speaker on sale, barely used for $400 so I jumped on it immediately. It's big but my wife was big on "can't hear the dialogue" so I jumped on this one after reading about Kef. Now I'm looking to make it all more immersive.

SUB: I picked up a used SVS SB12-NSD for $300. This was my first purchase. There are better ones but I had to start somewhere and this seemed like a solid start to get us rolling. Set it up to crossover at 80Hz.

AVR: We have a Sony STR-DH590 receiver. I know there's lots of other better ones but we didn't have the budget for a new one after we moved. We'd like to keep it for now, but in the near future I was looking into Sony AN1000 or a good deal on an Onkyo RZ50. But if I can stretch my DH590 for a bit that'd be ideal.

That's it. We have no other speakers currently. Already it sounds way better than just the two in-wall speakers alone. But I'm hoping to get creative and

THE BUDGET: One speaker at a time. Trying to get a couple L&R speakers plus maybe 2 rear or side in-ceiling speakers to have a nice surround setup. AVR might have to come later. I don't know. Budget is $1000 but I might be able to stretch it to $1500 with some sweet talking. :) But again...I'm patient and open to used speakers in good condition. Got the Kef R2c for $400 and it's "like new" and would retail for triple that.

THE QUESTIONS:

  1. I'm looking to get L&R speakers, ideally in-wall. What do you recommend? Or should I keep what I have? I found a good deal on a couple new Kef ci200QL in-wall speakers for $600 for both. Would those work okay with the R2c? (My wife and I like that they're rectangular. While they're not the same R series as the R2c, they're the same Kef brand and the Q series is no slouch. Bookshelf? Eh, again, my wife really doesn't wanna go that route if at all possible.)

  2. To complete our surround setup, where should we put our other speakers? I found a good deal on a couple of Kef ci200ER ceiling speakers for $200 for the pair. Same Kef brand, not quite as good as the Q series or R series but since they'd be for the surround/rear/side speakers, is that okay? If not, what should I do? I could try to get 4 of them and still be under that $1k budget with the above L&R speakers. Again, there's no place behind our couch for rear speakers since that's open to the kitchen so we figured ceiling speakers would be best. And my wife would rather do in-ceiling speakers vs hanging a speaker from the walls or ceiling.

  3. One option...I could just get 2 ceiling speakers these and keep the SpeakerCraft in-walls that I have as my L&R and put all that money towards a better AVR like the ones I mentioned above. I'm leaning towards getting the speakers right now though. Thoughts?

  4. With my current Sony receiver, I've never done a speaker calibration. I didn't even know it came with a calibration mic. I think I threw it away thinking it was an FM antenna or something. Lol. But the Sony ECM-AC2 mic seems to be under $30 so I suppose I could try again. One day we'll get a better receiver, but I'm looking to get the speakers first if possible. Should I buy this and run Sony's auto-calibrate?

Thank you all!

I've been using a 4.1.2 setup with a little Denon AVR for quite a bit of time now (no center channel due to lack of space) and been pretty happy with it. I calibrated the system with Audyssey MultEQ XT (non-32) and it was really, really good.

There were two things that bothered me though: the volume of voices was strangely low, which was unpleasant as the music was sometimes too loud over them. It was only affecting voices. Also, bass wasn't as good as I would have hoped to with a beefy subwoofer.

Due to space constraints I've always had specific problems with speaker placement, notably spacing them from the wall. My towers are at a distance of about one foot from the wall, and they have two holes on the rear for the lows.

Well I just tried to plug them up with a little acoustic foam, recalibrated everything (also using more positions than before, 6 instead of 3, which I never did before because it was long and I didn't see any advantage given the very small space my HT is in).

And the difference is MASSIVE! The soundstage is so much more immersive, bass is soooo deep compared to what it was before. It's almost like an entirely new system!

All I did was to plug up the rear ports and calibrate with more positions. I certainly didn't expect that to have such an impact, especially given how many people are describing the non-32 XT as trash.

Anyway, just wanted to share this little experience, I'm so happy to finally get a complete system that's fully satisfying for me without having spent "too" much (~ $4000 total, which was an unreasonable expense, but it could have been so much worse :p)

While testing 5.1.2 the surrounds seemed quieter. I realized during a Dolby channel check that while playing the right surround the front right plays at the same time. The same thing happens with the left surround. As yet I'm not sure if this is by design or a mistake I've made.

I have a 16ft x 20ft fully finished basement area that I want to turn into a theater room. My main question is should I go projector or 80 inch+ TV? My budget is around $5k.

Hey guys, first post. For a corporate award situation I can get 2 ultra towers for free. I already have 2 SVS prime elevation speakers. Does it make sense to build around these speakers to make a surround sound system? I would have to buy a 2 ultra bookshelf speakers and the center channel. I already have a Definitive sub. Majority use with be movies rather than music

What would be a currently made equivalent of SVS’s PB2-ultra subwoofer? I’m looking for something of like quality performance and features.

Thanks.

I have a Bose Companion 3 that I use as TV speakers. I recently bought a new TV with only optical output/input for sound. The Bose uses analog input, so I bought a DAC to convert the digital to analag sound. It works and the sound is the same as it was before.

The problem is adjusting the volume. The remote doesn't work with this setup, so i have to get up every time to adjust the sound on the Bose itself.

I used to use a receiver when I had a projector, but I was wondering if I might replace the DAC with the receiver and then be able to adjust he volume with the remote?

I just wanted to share my experience using REW and MiniDSP. Long story short if you are not happy with Audyseey and want to actually see what your subs are doing one of the best ways is to use REW and MiniDSP. I am shocked how much better my entire system sounds now. Plus I have four presets that I can adjust with one button depending on what I am listening to.

I have three subwoofers in my system, a PSA TV3602 (dual 18's) top of the line HSU ported 15' sub and a much older Velodyne 15' sub. Using a Denon 4500H reciever.

I have never been completely happy with the bass and thought I needed to get another sub, or switch out a sub to a better one. Before I bought another sub I thought I would try MiniDSP and REW, after a steep learning curve. I finally got results that I like.

I wanted to share my experience with Audyseey for some reason it really sucked out all of my bass. I even bought the $20 app and spent a lot of time tinkering around with it, but I felt like something was lacking. With the app I was able to get better results, but I am kinda shocked that Audyseey lowered the bass as much as it did. so much without the app adjustments. Audyseey without the APP adjustments is the red graph. Which I think was way worse than using no processing at all, which is the green graph. Finally with the last graph I was able to get a flat response using the EQ and time alignment feature in REW and the MiniDSP. I know this is not optimal for home theater but it sounds great in stereo when listening to music, which is a preset I was never able to have with the Denon by itself.

Three Subs with only Audyseey with no smoothing

Three subs with Minidsp and Rew no smoothing

I forgot to add this it is my House Curve for movies.

I have a Polk ES series setup with a denon x6700h. ES20's for the Front L/R and the ES25 for the center. Here is the EQ I came up with after running Audyssey room correction to get a flat curve and realizing just how dry it made everything sound.

Overall EQ I made

From right to left, this is what I did:

  • Strong high end rolloff
  • Small re-boost at 5k to get it back up to 0 for clarity of guitars
  • Small and tight but very important boost at 3k for crunchier guitars
  • Small and wide boost at 1k. I'm actually not sure what this did yet and I need to a/b test it more
  • A 2db low shelf at 300hz
  • An additional low shelf of 4db at 120hz
  • Getting the fronts and center flat down to 60 with a few specific and very tight EQs (yes the Polk ES series can handle this well)
  • None of this applies to the sub. For the sub, I removed audyssey eq at 30hz and then boosted it at 40hz to get a smooth db increase from 30 down to 20hz, and falt from 100hz down to 30hz.

And this is what my fronts and center curve (yellow) looks like given the room EQ and my personal EQs.

I'm much happier with it now. It's warmer and crunchier. However, I need to figure out the 300hz-1k range as there's still a little warmth or something missing. I feel like it's 90% there.

In December, I picked up a s760h for 350 brand new from Costco on holiday sale, and a pair for Elac b6.2 speakers, after reading a bunch of reviews, and seeing that people generally liked them. I don't have a sub yet. I know that AVR is wildly overkill for a 2.0 setup, but it was the cheapest one I could find that had hdmi2.1 with 40gbit 4k hdr vrr.

But then when I got them home, and actually tried them, I didn't like them at all, primarily because I have a L shaped living room, and my work desk is 90 degrees offset from the primarily TV position.

This meant when my wife was playing videogames while I worked, I was 90 degrees off axis.

I thought I was losing my mind, because everything but the bass was nearly gone when it reached me while I was working. I made a post here, and was told that it's due to me not being used to speakers with bass, and that my previous attempt with using a soundbar didn't sound weird due to lack of bass, and side firing speakers, was told that different speakers wouldn't help the problem.

But I researched further, and found Erin's Audio Corner with this chart

This shows rather intense lateral dispersion in medium and high frequencies for the Elac b6.2. The problem isn't that Elac speakers are bad persay, they just don't work with the shape of my room having a 90 degree bend in it. They did sound really good while on axis.

After doing some research, I found that kef q150 speakers aren't subject to the same problems with lateral dispersion. While they have some, it's wildly less than the Elacs.

Admittedly, the q150 has weaker bass, but to be honest, that doesn't matter to me. I primarily wanted to improve dialog quality for tv shows and videogames, not trying to make a real theater experience, or listen to music.

The end result was switching from Elac b6.2 to kef q150 actually fixed my problems, and I am much happier with the audio experience.

I may end up adding a subwoofer to add the bass back, but I'm really happy with the q150 pair!

This goes to say that just because something is a good speaker, doesn't mean it's a good speaker for you.

I know, I know, HTIAB. It’ll be in the bin when we move and can reap the benefits of not having a party wall any more.

I’m mostly asking here because I’m pretty sure it’s the HTIAB, not the Xbox, especially given I’ve managed to crash the HTIAB when pausing and playing something repeatedly on Prime Video too.

Xbox > TV > HTIAB over ARC btw. Using DTS. It’s a Sony BDV HTIAB.

Essentially, when I pause and then play any kind of video player on my Series X there’s a few seconds of silence before the audio kicks in.

Anyone know what this could be? Google isn’t terribly helpful as pretty much every result relates to no audio at all rather than no audio for a few seconds when an audio stream starts…

It doesn’t happen on games, YouTube, etc so maybe it’s related to certain types of audio?

I’m looking for some advice here since I have been unable to get my surround sound working properly on my Xbox Series X since I’ve had it.

My setup is as follows:

  1. Xbox Series X connected via HDMI to my Samsung QN90A (to the game HDMI port)

  2. Samsung QN90A connected to my Pioneer VSX-534 via HDMI eARC.

XBOX -> Samsung QN90A -> Pioneer VSX-534

I have front middle, right and left speakers, and two rear speakers (installed in the ceiling on either side). I also have a subwoofer connected. The Samsung QN90A has Dolby Atmos turned on.

My Xbox shows that my setup is compatible with 5.1/7.1 uncompressed, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Atmos. There’s two issues:

  1. When I select 5.1 uncompressed there’s no audio delay, but the sound from the rear speakers bleeds into the front speakers. This makes the sound not seem as directional as when I select Dolby.
  2. When I select Dolby Atmos the surround sounds great, but the sound delay is so bad that it’s unusable. I’ve tried connecting the Xbox directly to the receiver and receiver to TV and this doesn’t help the sound lag.

Does anyone who has an Xbox have any insight into this issue? The happy medium I’ve found for now is selecting Dolby Digital. The surround sounds accurate and the audio delay is minimal, but still noticeable.

I've got a smallish room in my house and a decent home theater setup. Yamaha TSR-700 AVR, older Klipsch icon LCR speakers. I've also got a very nice turntable and a record collection. How many of you are just using the AVR exclusively when listening to 2 channel stereo? Or, are you adding in other equipment? I'm considering adding a dedicated 2 channel integrated amp for my Hi-Fi listening but I'm unsure how I'd hook it up, like maybe swap speaker cables with banana plugs at the speakers? Or AVR pre out into the 2 channel? Even considering some additional stereo speakers but I'm short on room to try that out. I guess I'm just brain storming, what have you all done?

I just want to have a better sound connected to my projector without having to pass cables everywhere. I have an xgimi horizon. I see some option connecting and Apple TV to run airplay on Sonos for example. Or any solution exist where I connect a “box” to the projector that can diffuse sound on other speakers ? Logitech z906 or Soundbar Jbl BarPro1000

I'm at a little loss here

I have had my Logitech system for almost eleven years and i think they are Phenomenally good and i use it with my playstation five console and i have many blu ray movies and 4k movies and with that said i bought the ezcoo hdmi Audio extractor just about two years ago so i could connect my Logitech to the PS5.

Now i have been wondering to be able to get the real cinema experience with the Atmos sound and also the DTS HD master audio sound if i should get myself the Jbl barpro1000 or just stick with my Logitech surround system ?

Could you give me any advices or if someone here went from the logitech surround system to the Jbl and also if there is really much difference
