I Just bought a steak and cheese pie from my local Night & Day. There was no molten liquid cheese inside, instead the pastry on top had a small coating of dried baked on cheese.

Is this what we've come to as a country? How far we've fallen.

I have had Covid twice, first in mid-2022, second time in mid-2024. First time was horrendous, I’ve never been so ill.

Second time was so mild I nearly didn’t even think to test - but since then I have just been constantly ill with little colds and bugs, like at least once a month it feels relentless and it’s so different to how I used to be - I used to get sick maybe twice a year. Even a close friend has noticed and commented on how frequently I’ve been ill.

But - I’ve also heard last year was just a really gnarly one for bugs.

I wondered if anyone else had noticed a dip in their immunity post covid or had been getting frequently sick lately but hadn’t had covid.

Not a scientific study ofc but I’m curious to know anecdotally.

****please no deep cut covid stuff in either direction - my take on it is that covid is probably pretty bad for us but we also have to operate in the realities of life, and endless isolating and masking is a pretty huge ask, realistically. No animosity toward whoever gave me covid both times! That’s just life.

Kia ora! I'm a high school science teacher, about to enter my 7th year of it. I'm considering trialing Term 1 without computers in the classroom... Have noticed the addiction (let's be honest) to technology, myself included, and am going left-field to see how it goes.

We do a lot of experiments, I show educational YouTube clips, we discuss, we read, we complete worksheets, ask questions, tell jokes, all the good stuff. I don't think we'll be lacking but I guess we'll find out!

For context, we are a BYOD school, and I am yet to run this past SLT or anything. I would love to first hear from fellow teaches and parents of teenagers on whether you think this idea is silly and outdated, or has some merit.

I'm sure this has to have happened to many people. I'm in university. I love to study, I love to write essays, I love to take notes, I love all of it. I truly put a lot of effort into my work. Recently all of my assignments have been coming back ai generated. The first time was for a final essay weighting 40%. I failed it and almost failed the class a result. The next was a minor assignment that didn't have as much of an impact, but still annoying. I've started putting all my work into ai defectors and they all say like 82%, 75% etc and I don't understand WHY. I don't use ai. I detest ai. I have a family friend who used to work as an assessor and she said Turnitin (the ai detector used here in New Zealand) is incredibly inaccurate - yet they continue to use it. I'm just so put out from all of it that I just want to drop out. I'm sick of looking like a cheater, and I know none of my tutors believe me when I say I don't use ai.

Shot for all the epic suggestions team. After reading through everything and having a yarn with the missus, reckon I've got a solid plan sorted:

Short term:

  • Signed up for Level 1 Te Reo at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa starting next month. Figure if I'm gonna be here long term, should probably learn how to pronounce more than just "kia ora" without sounding like a complete muppet
  • Getting my barista certification at Mojo next month. The idea of making flat whites and having a laugh with random punters for a few mornings a week sounds bloody choice. Plus the wife reckons I need to get out of the house before she throttles me
  • Joined Wellington Tramping Club - first trip is next weekend up to Powell Hut. Hoping I don't completely embarrass myself or need a rescue chopper

Longer term:

  • Looking at volunteering with DOC doing predator control work. Some GC in the comments mentioned helicoptering into remote areas which sounds mint
  • Gonna hold off on the lifestyle block dreams for now after reading horror stories about citidiots trying farming. Maybe start with a veggie garden that isn't completely munted first
  • Not touching Warhammer with a 40,000 foot pole after those comments about going broke. Four mil isn't THAT much when plastic crack's involved apparently

Cheers for keeping me grounded and stopping me from doing anything too stupid with the windfall. Special thanks to the "congrats and fuck you" guy - got a proper laugh out of that one.

I have a friend who is going to be having an abortion in a few weeks time. She's obviously pretty nervous about the whole thing, and unfortunately due to the stigma surrounding these sorts of issues, she wants to keep it all on the downlow. The father wants nothing to do with her. I've read about what happens after you take the abortion pills, and the process sounds pretty awful. I don't want her to have to go through this alone. Apart from just turning up and being there for her, are there any tips from people who have gone through this as to how I can best support my friend?

I go to gigs featuring opera singers Amitai and Pene Pati for opera and Moses Mackay their cousin. They’re in Sol3Mio, a classical crossover group. I’ve also been to opera shows featuring the brothers on occasion.

Kiri Te Kanawa is Maori also.

I am responding to a post that stated we do not participate or go to opera or classical. I also attend NZSO and Auckland Philharmonia etc.

If they don't make a good announcement on the reinstatement of the Panmure sign in April there will be riots.
