There is relief tonight that two children missing for weeks have been found safe and sound. For 11 days, an Amber Alert was issued, looking for any sign of them, and it was finally lifted last night when Surrey RCMP say the kids were located in Alberta. Grace Ke reports. (...)

(...) Abduction charges have been laid against the mother and her boyfriend in relation to the incident.

In an effort to conserve drinking water during the ongoing drought, the Metro Vancouver Regional District is implementing Stage 2 water restrictions as of Aug. 4.

Under Stage 2 water restrictions:

  • All lawn watering is prohibited
  • Trees, shrubs, and flowers can be watered by hand or using soaker hoses or drip irrigation at any time, or by using a sprinkler between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. any day
  • Vegetable gardens can be watered at any time
  • Aesthetic water features, such as fountains, cannot be filled or topped up
  • Washing impermeable surfaces like driveways and sidewalks is prohibited except in limited circumstances--

Currently UBC has a number of bike lanes that feed into campus. These include the lanes on Wesbrook Mall, East Mall, and University Boulevard. However, they're all basically just paint on the road.

UBC is surrounded by two key areas of density: Wesbrook Village (accessible by Wesbrook Mall and East Mall with a 7 minute bike) and Point Grey Village (accessible by University Boulevard with an 11 minute bike). This is an ideal setup for improving bike infrastructure, especially for students.

Currently, there's a decent route on the pedestrian walkway in between the big sports fields (between Wesbrook and East Mall). However, it terminates before entering the area of the university that actually has buildings. This makes the route between Wesbrook Village and UBC doable, but more challenging than it needs to me. A straight shot up Wesbrook Mall would directly connect Wesbrook Village with the Bus Loop for e.g. trips along the 99 B-Line. Meanwhile, a straight shot up from East Mall would bring people directly to the heart of campus. Currently, these roads have pretty sketchy bike lanes that discourage biking.

Along University Blvd, a similar story holds. The road is actually really nice (even for recreational riding), but the infrastructure isn't there for it.

What I'd like to see is for actual separated bike lanes along these corridors. Given UBC's goals of sustainability (and just the general benefits of micromobility for students), this should be a no-brainer.

I’d guess they’d go for about $150,000 a piece if you built blocks of them. The lower unit is probably cheaper without the rooftop access.

And yes, this is the future of home ownership here, not single detached living.

Got a note back from the IG creator. Rents for about $850 a month and is just north of downtown Tokyo.

I'm otherwise occupied that day, but I'm very interested in what this part of the discussion entails:

Located next to 105 Keefer site where a billionaire real estate developer, Beedie, plans to build gentrifier condos, the Chinatown Memorial Plaza is a significant cultural landmark in the heart of Chinatown that honours the sacrifices of Chinese Canadian railway workers and veterans. During the tour, you'll gain insights into the plaza's original design concept, context, and significance, and why Beedie's 105 Keefer condo project will negatively impact the plaza.

Scabies cream shortage (self.vancouver)
submitted 2 years ago by 601error to c/vancouver

I haven't seen any media reporting on this, but I have visited about ten pharmacies in Metro Vancouver this week looking for Nix 5% permethrin cream to treat scabies, and every pharmacy was out of stock. One pharmacist said that there has been a problem obtaining it from the manufacturer for about a month.

I was able to obtain enough leftover cream from a family member. However, if you get scabies, you will find it difficult to get this first-line medication.

Friendship kiss (latte.isnot.coffee)
submitted 2 years ago by [email protected] to c/vancouver

For a city that is all about showing public acceptance of gays and trans, why do the men seem so uptight as a matter of respect and greeting, for a man to kiss another man's face, on the cheek of course?

Explain how people are all for 2 men frnech kissing, but a friendship kiss is too sexual, there seems to be a contradiction.

Are men not comfortable showing a bond with other men but let's love the gays? I grew up with a kiss on the forehead or cheek is strictly general affection to show a sentimental care for the person.
