Fun Fact: The Roman Republic viewed regicide as a virtue. As I understand it, "he was trying to become king" was grounds for a justifiable homicide defense.
Yeah, even when they had Emperors the idea was so ground in that they never claimed the title of Rex.
Partly because Imperator was seen as better anyways but it was absolutely a thing.
