Exactly this. My whole life I've been told that executives deserve their massive compensation because of all the high risk decisions they make. But if they ever get called out they take no responsibility. It's infuriating!

Executive: 'my manager said so'

Manager: 'my director said so'

Director: 'my VP said so'

VP: 'the CEO said so'

CEO: 'tye management board said so'

Management board: 'it was a collective decision, so no one is to blame'

Corporate unaccountability at its finest.

Generally each step morphs slightly:

  1. my boss told me to!
  2. I told them to do it safely! (The thing that can't be done safely)
  3. I told them to solve the problem! (The problem caused by corporate policy)
  4. I told them to meet the quarterly goals! (Goals that are only possible by breaking laws and or official policy)
  5. I set the competitive strategy! I have a fiduciary duty to shareholders! (I'm morally justified in only prioritizing profits)
  6. .... profit

Oh, you're missing the most important part of the meta:

CEO: We just did that the consulting company told us

Consulting company: We just make recommendations

So what if, and hear me out on this one, we throw ALL of them in jail, then? If you did it, you're guilty.

Do that 5 times and all of the sudden watch all corporations start behaving themselves like there is no tomorrow
