I'll bet the reason they don't send back the Maryland man is because he's already dead. I don't want that, I hope he can safely return to his family, but the reason they're not returning him is because something has happened that money cannot fix.
I've had a similar thought.
Dead, or severely hurt. Or the system purposely dehumanizes so much that there is no way to connect a person to a real identity anymore.
Or El Salvadorean president is trying to leverage the situation to get something big in return. It's an unpleasant dehumanizing situation, but the man is now a bargaining chip for them.
I agree but what exactly does that have to do with a football trophy?
