Edit: Thank you all for your condolences and the beautiful snippets from your own furry friends. It is so special to be loved by an animal and love them back.
After nineteen years together, we had many beautiful memories and adventures together, but one of my favorite was when we visited the beach. She absolutely loved it and would run up and down chasing seagulls and barking at coming waves as happy as can be.

I lost my good boy Scott a few years back. When he was a pup and we were stuck in apartments I had always promised him that one day we'd get a yard and a dog door for him.
We finally bought a house, and the first thing we did was fence the yard and install a dog door. He loved having a yard so much. He was always waiting for me outside when I got home from work, and he loved to lay in the sun and grass.
Love you Scotty. You were the sweetest boy.
I think that is the best thing - whether it's a spouse, kids, or a pet - having someone genuinely excited to see you come home can make you forget most of life's troubles for a short time.
In terms of dogs, it's great. Our one has a special tail wag for when he's happy to see us, it's like a circular motion much like Tails from Sonic 2 does when he's running at pace - different from his usual happy or excited wag, and unique to being happy to see someone.
Scott sounds awesome though. Care to share another cool memory with us?
Scott had a lot of nicknames. Scotty, Scottato, Scottocles, and of course, Scott Von Scott of the Scottsdale Scotts who did Scott so Scottily in the war of Scotteen Twelve. He particularly enjoyed that one lol
He loved going places, but he hated being in the car, which I always found kind of funny. He'd always happily jump into the car, but then he'd whine the entire trip until we got wherever we were going.
One time we went out camping, and it was a several hour drive. He whined the whole way, and I was so mad at him. We got there though, and we hiked a few miles out to the camping spots. They were pretty much all taken, but my husband and I did not have the energy to hike back down in the dark. So, we found an out of the way spot that wasn't on top of any foliage and set up our tent. It was on a slope, so that night was basically a mandatory cuddle party while we slid into each other and tried to sleep.
The next day we gathered everything up and hiked back out to the car. Scott pulled on his leash the whole way back, but when we got to the car and started driving he hardly whined at all. He was very ready to be home, just like we were. It was a dark, rainy, uncomfortable night, but it would have been so much worse without my big galoot there.
That is awesome! I love it when dogs "get it" when you've been trying to tell them what's best for them. My dog loves to be lazy and sit in the sun in the garden, and it takes a lot to fire him up for a walk. When he does get back though, he is absolutely knackered and it's lovely feeling him lie down on my feet to sleep.
