I have started;

Saving funny/relatable images like this when I come across them.
Texting them one a day to, basically the one person I'm still in regular contact with.

It fulfills the role of keeping in touch (like small talk does for regular people), without so far causing any of the anxiety, procrastination, out of sight out of mind, ghosting problems that typically plague my relationships. YMMV, naturally.
