Hadn't realized David Drake had retired from writing. I've read so many of his books over the years, from Hammer's Slammers to Lord of the Isles. Perhaps my favourite was the Reaches (IIRC), since, well, Pirates!
Unfortunately, I haven't read the RCN series, so can't answer your question.
This is a crosspost from Reddit, thanks to our bot that brings that content here, so the OP on Reddit won't see your reply. But I'm glad you responded, as that's the point of bringing those posts here, so we can discuss them here.
I haven't read any of that series, and would be interested in hearing more about it. Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts.
