Very cool. Make sure to round off those sharp corners.
I rounded them just enough that it's not going to hurt your hands, but I'm tempted to go further in case he runs into it. Since these just lift off the wall without needing to unscrew anything it'd be pretty easy. The toughest part would be repainting and finishing. I'm also a bit worried about chip-out since I was too lazy to cap the edges of the plywood with hardwood.
I'd go with clear cabinet bumpers like this until you can come up with some kind of solution:

They're great to have around for my dog, who has been blind all her life. Probably good to keep around for a small child, for when you discover that they grew two inches overnight and their head found a new cabinet to gravitate to.
