I thought they called it Soylent as kind of a joke. I'm sure they're already fully aware of what Soylent Green is lol

[–] powerofm 76 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yeah the creator said the name was specifically meant to pique curiosity and I'd say OP fell for it

Yes that is where the name stems from.

[–] Thann@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago

Been waiting a while for this lol

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago

It was soy and lentil in the book.

The movie based on the book made it people.

Soylent Cola? How is it?

It varies from person to person.

[–] TacoThrash3r@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago

I came here for this!

[–] Conyak@lemmy.tf 29 points 1 year ago

I think you overestimate the knowledge of the average consumer.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago (7 children)

This joke was old in 2013.

[–] BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As I recall, the joke was getting old in the late 90s on slashdot

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Yes but I'm talking about when the actual Soylent beverage was invented and named by Rob Reinhardt. 2013.

Actually drinking a Soylent Mint Chocolate right now. One of the better flavors!

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It's the long pig that makes it tasty.

There was a movie in the 1970s about a dystopian future where there was not enough food to go around. The main food company was named Soilent.

So it was coming out with a new product that would end hunger. It was made out of algae, and it was called Soilent Green.

Charleston Heston was the hero of the movie and he broke into the factory and figured out that it was actually made from dead people.

[–] Lazarus@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago

Thank you :)

And holy shit what a movie…

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (3 children)

It was spelled Soylent, just like this product.

As far as meal replacement shakes go, Soylent is the least offensive to your mouth if not in its name.

The mint one is especially good. But they certainly can't replace a meal, IMO. They don't really do anything at all to make you feel full enough that they actually satisfy hunger. I tend to have them for breakfast, but with toast or a bagel to actually feel like I ate.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

My brother managed to drink only it for a while and it gave him crazy bad poops initially but it balanced out. He's just the soulless kind of guy it's meant for, he didn't miss the taste of real food in the slightest.

He's kicked it, though, probably because it really isn't great long term as the only thing you eat.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I lived on the Soylent bottles for quite a while, but one particularly busy active summer 2021 it landed me in the hospital because it turns out Soylent has no sodium, and if you have no sodium in your body then you end up in the hospital on a saline drip. Lesson learned and I share that lesson with everyone every time this topic comes up.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Important PSA, especially for tech bros like my literal brother. I'll remember that!

Soylent; encouraging cannibalism without advertising it

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Whoa they still exist? I remember getting a bunch some long ass time ago and it was decent but pretty expensive. I don't think they had flavours like this though.

4.39?!? Fuck that's so much. Granted I used to drink the powder mix so I'm used to those prices

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I used to live on those when they cost a little over $1 per bottle. The price inflation now is outrageous. Anyway I stopped drinking Soylent mid-2021 soon after they switched their sweetener to allulose. My body did not like allulose. I drink Jimmy Joy Plenny Shake now, and eat MealSquares.
