RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

After working in a role that I didn't necessarily like at a company that wasn't a good fit for me I quit at the end of august. Up until last week I hadn't really had any new potential jobs come up but now it seems I got multiple options :) Looks like it's going to work out after all.

me too! I quit a job that wasn't good a week ago :D . I haven't found new job though, I really want a job related to Linux, DevOps etc, but I am getting one that suits it. :/

It's fun. I have it now with lots of work from home too. Recommended. :)

The company is not very good at following modern practices but... It's relaxed and they have lots of money coming in, so no pressure to perform constantly. Not even daily standups. It's amazing.

  • A grass snake seems to have taken up residence under our compost heap. Hopefully it will be a suitable hibernation spot.
  • New seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Shrinking are out.
  • My SO and I went for a good walk in a nearby woodland nature reserve. The autumn colours are really coming though now.
  • I now have some cosy fleece pyjamas. I haven't owned pyjamas for decades, but can see will that they will revolutionise my weekend mornings. I don't know why I didn't get some years ago.

I started watching lower decks and I need to catch up. and Picard. And there's another coming up with 7 of 9? I'm so far behind it's not funny. I was such a dedicated fan 25 years ago that I have the federation and klingon insignias tattoo'ed along with the enterprise. :D

I started reading 'The Country of the Pointed Firs' by Sarah Orne Jewett. And I love it.

I never heard of that author before, only opening this book because an author whose work I appreciate a lot said his own appreciation for her. So far, I only had time to read the first four chapters but I think I can safely say I was already hooked after the first few paragraphs.

BTW, the book and a few others of hers are freely available on the Project Gutenberg, if you don't mind reading ebooks: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/202

Finally decided to travel to another state just to see my friends after 2 months social hiatus, really happy to see and hangout with everyone.

Slightly mixed-mood news that day, found out my crush seeing someone, am both happy for her and disappointed at myself :')

A lot of small little things.

I got some brown habanero and biquinho peppers. The seeds were reserved for breeding projects, and the flesh for a hot but flavourful paste.

Sunday lunch pleased my nephew (a picky eater) so much that my sister called the next day, asking me for the recipe. It's just an adapted version of Made with Lau's sweet and sour fish (here's a link).

Now that I bought the missing parts, watching my mum enjoy her new computer (with some old parts). "It doesn't take a whole hour to boot!"... okay, she was exaggerating, it only took 5min or so to boot. But still, she's happy with it.

I typically get a common cold every single Spring. (inb4 Southern Hemisphere here.) This year was no exception. However - I only spent a single day sick, I could work fine if I wanted, but I still had room to call the day off and spend the whole day on the bed.

For the first time, explaining a hard tech problem I was trying to solve to my mother. And she got it.

Had to use the making of sandwiches as an analogy. But it worked.

Watching my friends enjoy the game I homebrewed with much love. Yes, I nearly killed them all twice but they managed to survive and everyone had fun.

I got Sonic X Shadow Generations as an early birthday present 🥹 I'm no good at Sonic games that use boost and drift controls, plus I've been busy, so I'm taking my time playing through the story, but it was a sweet present and I'm feeling super nostalgic.

Plus it's nice to see Shadow being written better. Sega's own writers have been pretty vocal about hating how they're told to write him. It seems like Sega's finally starting to ease up and letting them inject a little more emotion into the silly Shonen animal series again.

I am getting so old I can't remember what I did yesterday lol. Let's see... last week my Dad and I went out for lunch and we usually try a new restaurant. Last week we found a Chinese place with a CHINESE menu... it was so good. That kind of spicy where it burns but you have to keep eating it. :)
