I also don't understand this. Trump is known to be a conman. It was so obvious that he will do this. Was the alternative actually that bad?

This is not a grift against the early adopters. This is a pathway to legalized bribery as any transaction is visible on the blockchain and any major coinholder can choose to reveal who they are to Trump for increased access. Remember it is illegal for Trump to take foreign money but anyone can buy his crypto.
