See, this is why people are pissed off.

We are our own sovereign nation, why the fuck would we ever give subsidies to foreign companies? If we want to encourage certain businesses, those should be based in Canada hiring mostly Canadian.

When people read shit like this, blatant corruption is obvious and it gives less trust to our institutions.

Yeah yeah, Musk is a piece of shit, but that doesn't really validate the statement, "I'd rather watch the world burn than give him money." The good news is, there are lots of better options for EVs these days. In the meantime, rather than piss and moan that the government is helping people get access to high speed internet via Starlink, get on their case about putting alternatives in place so we don't need it.

I was looking at a Tesla as my next car a couple years ago when there weren't many choices. Now I can't justify it on capability or who it financially supports. For my home internet, I have exactly two choices right now - 5Mbps max DSL or Starlink. Is that Elon's fault? I had a company announce they were doing fiber to the home in my area 2 years ago. I signed up immediately. I'm still waiting to be connected. When it is, I'll be suspending my Starlink service.

If you want money to stay in Canada, there need to be options for that to happen. That's on Canadians, both the government and our businesses.

Ontario just re-elected a buffoon who offered empty words as a platform. Over his term he has burnt billions of Ontario taxpayer money to rip up contracts for green energy (only to restart similar projects later), alcohol sales (half a billion to speed up a deadline by 6-12 months). Yet, he only suggested he'd tear up Musk's Starlink contract and went back on it when tariffs were called off.

We have the same voter apathy problems up here. Stupid people and manipulation tactics know no borders.

Yea, despite Marit Stiles' best efforts (and Bonnie Crombie's mediocre efforts), Ford is better at getting headlines when he needs them. They didn't get enough opportunities to challenge his narrative and call him out on his scandals.

And since Trump distracted everybody, Dougie bet that voters would be too burned out to kick him out of office. With a 45% turnout this election, he was unfortunately correct.

I guess we get the governments we deserve. Bribing people with their own money seems to work on the average Ontarian.

Anything over a fraction of a penny/century is far too much.

The article is behind of paywall but it would be great to know a breakdown. I know about the ON starlink contract and I'm guessing Tesla gets EV subsidies. Anything else?

Every person Quebec either has access to fiber internet, or (if it is not practical to lay fiber) subsidized Starlink. So there must be sizable contract there.
