I got banned from there when they made a stickied post saying, basically, "this is not an echo chamber, it's just a place where we only want to hear what we like" and I replied "you just described an echo chamber."

An echo chamber technically needs to amplify and distort input to meet the criticism.

The rabble agreeing with everything is basically that. To be completely honest lemmy is very echo-ey as well. Except most of us are just agreeing that these lunatics are indeed irrational and completely brainwashed to the point of literally harming themselves, their families and society.
I don't like this definition of echo chamber as any group with similar opinions. If those opinions are based on facts and expert advice I don't think it applies anymore. To me an echo chamber in the dangerous sense is when people have a dangerous or uninformed consensus because they don't let facts or advice from outside reach them. That's very different than people with similar opinions finding each other. The latter is just how humans are.
This post should be pinned on some Wall of Shame.

And now they're apparently starting to set up shop on Lemmy too. Before I blocked it, I saw they're on their best behaviour too. But mark my words, once the dating and flirting period is over, their shoes are going to come off and their feet are going to be up on the table.
I would've hoped that by now everyone would've learnt their lesson to never trust or listen to these people again. They flat out lie when they're talking about things like 'freedom' and once they're in power, they serve themselves and fuck over everyone else in society. And their leaders, that they don't mind associating with and supporting are a bunch of inbred kiddie fiddlers and have been since long before Trump. And yet here we are again, letting them have a seat at the table.
These people cannot be fucking trusted. And I'm willing to bet that they're going to be a source of a lot of downvote trolling too, in queer communities and women-centric communities.

The whole idea is that it does not turn into another the_Donald, but I perfectly understand your caution. There's still users trying to post "in earnest" (according to them at least), but they get ratio'd so it's not as bad as you might think.

i blocked conservative instance on lemmy and on reddit,b ecause i keep seeing it, dont want to see it or engage it. and reddit was actively pushing the sub to the front. i suspect on lemmy , without russian bots riling them out, they will have less of an impact than on reddit, its well known the trolls from the farms control the subs there.
Why would you have your default as sort by controversial?
It's the juiciest content. But not recommended for people susceptible to rageboners or rage bait as fun as it can be. It's like a hard drug, gotta keep usage in check.
The mods set it as the default for the subreddit in an attempt to combat brigading.
it seems all the large subs are doing that now, conservative is just banning any dissenting opinion, full stop. but ive seen an increase in filtering from other subs.
