Canadians have always traveled to the USA to to a bit of sneaky bargain hunting. I wouldn't be surprised to see this start going the other way.

Fully expecting a black market to develop of bringing goods across the border from Canada to sell tarrif free.

The mafia and other organized crime will switch from smuggling drugs to smuggling everyday items.

So I lived in Lebanon during their economic crisis a few years back, this is exactly what happened, certain stores with ties to powerful "political sects" were fully stocked selling all kinds of electronics duty and tariff free, basically the same price as what it was sold for before tax in the USA. Cash only, no warranties. Of course everything was 30-40% cheaper than their customers. Wonder how they got 'em.

That's like saying BNC in public during the 90.

I can't imagine a lot of people want to piss off CBP right now. Don't want to get caught smuggling a laptop and get sent to Venezuela.

I live near the northern border, and recently a client at work wanted us to cross the border to pick up samples weekly, my job is shipping/receiving so I got asked and said not a chance I'm crossing the border once, let alone regularly. Just need one asshole having a bad day and what could I even do about it.

Luckily I have good bosses and none of them want to do it either and don't blame me for not wanting to do it. Now the client will pay more to ship directly to us through a 3rd party.

Easy enough to do for personal electronics. Just don't bring the box with you... Unbox it there, if asked about it say you've always had it.

I bought the dbrand Steamdeck skin and case (killswitch) based on some reviews and heavily on the fact that it said made in Canada.

There's going to be a lot of border crossing and coyotes going into Mexico for cheap, probably soon to be banned goods.

I don't understand, people didn't see this coming?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 4 days ago

I would wager that most Republicans and a good chunk of other Americans truly did not see this coming because they have no fucking clue what and how tariffs work, probably told everyone else to do the research while confidently wrong about how tariffs work.

You see, God-Emperor Trump said the costs would be paid by other countries and not passed on to consumers.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

this is going to be an interesting transition

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 days ago

This is the industry I worry about most when it comes to tariffs.

All Trump's demands to harden the border security suddenly make sense to me. It was never about fentanyl. It was just for literally everything else after destroying America's trade relations with the world. 😂

To keep Americans from leaving the country...
