Good. Maybe people will quit buying that garbage that just goes in a landfill. That might be the one good thing about the tariffs in a sea of shit.

Fwiw, I get all my fishing supplies off Ali Express and that's been a great way to get everything I need at a far lower cost than I could locally. I can get products meant for the Japanese market that simply aren't available here. It's literally the same stuff otherwise, just cutting out the big box store middleman.

Even if it is "knock off", I'll tell ya with confidence the fish don't give a fuck.

Another data point in the same vein: I've picked up loads of great cycling gear from AliExpress for a fraction of what it would have cost me buying it locally. I also picked up a great set of scales for my coffee brewing.

You definitely have to be more careful about what you buy, as the default option on AliExpress is basically to get garbage - at least if you choose cheap stuff - but some very good stuff can be bought there.

I‘d say Aliexpress is still one credibility layer above Temu, Shein and wish

Another fwiw I've gotten two crap products off Ali Express, a set of bubble floats that were clearly manufacturing defects and a glasses cleaner that was just a box with a motor, but I had no issue returning either for a full refund. Got to keep the bubble floats, too, which was nice since in the set of 5, two worked. I don't think I'll buy anything that uses electricity off the site again, but for solid goods? Just fine.

I don't understand why they can't just add a line item for tariffs cost and why they can't say the cost of tariffs is being passed on to customers.

Instead they talk about raising the price of goods due to changing global operating costs.

That makes it sound like the price is something they control and the money is going to them. But the money for US tariffs will be going to the US government, not to these companies.

I'm pretty sure the word you are looking for is 'greedflation'. If they say how much the tariffs increase the price in a line item fashion then they can't add on their own bit of greedflation.

Tariffs are at 245 percent. I doubt they can do much in terms of adding their own surcharges.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago

But when trump next folds like the wet blanket he is and arbitrarily drops it back to 145% next week, they can "lower" their prices to be 185% above the baseline and pocket the difference with fewer people noticing.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Just wait until the tarrifs are eleventy-billion percent!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 days ago

Because they don’t want to piss of trump probably.

First good news to come out of this nonsense

People touting it as good news must really wish we had a regulatory government that cared enough to actually reduce waste by targeting Temu and Shein directly, plus any other fast fashion pedler. Maybe even create rules and regulations regarding consumer goods in general.

I wish we were in that timeline...

Edit: also inb4 Trump cuts exemptions specific to Temu and Shein since he governs with permanent Bizzaro-World rules.

Glad your president is working for you.
