What's Germany's plan to secure the EU merchant fleet against Iranian anti-ship missiles, fired by Iranian proxies in Yemen, without help from USA or Israel?

Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @[email protected]
In the following sentence, Merz told all the respect he has for the IDF.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, the IDF starves everybody in a medieval siège, lures people with a little food, watch them fight among them for a few grains of Rice, then bombs them with drones and tanks. Litteraly everyday.
ItΒ΄s all fine, they got Merz' respect.
Merz is a disaster on so many levels ...
Centrist neolibs like him are the plague of a society. They chafe away at people's hope, doing more for big corporations than for the people, throwing some bones of social benifits. Long run though.. Long run their policies degrade standards of living and erode moral fiber until the desperation creeps in and extremism of any flavour becomes the dominant path.
Then all act like they didn't see the Spanish Inquisition coming.
He's not a centrist, he's proper right wing.
You know what the center positions are?
Social democrats and reform democratic socialists.
From a Ukrainian point of view he's better than Scholtz.
Good for Ukrainians.
Really? First he says all limitations are off the table, and next that Taurus will not be sent.
First he says all limitations are off the table
Tbf, he did not.
One of the many failings of Merz is, that he is a terrible communicator.
What he said was: "All range restrictions have been lifted", which was understood by most to be the announcement of a new policy change.
But actually he was just referring to something that had already happened half a year earlier under Scholz.
His defenders will point out, that what he said was factually true and that he did not announce anything new. But once again, Merz seems incapable of considering the context under which such questions are asked and how his words would be interpreted.
Scholtz said no right from the start.
And saying no later is better because ... ?
Because there is a chance that Mertz actually considered doing something, but something went wrong (Trump, probably).
He formed a coalition with Scholz's party after the election to become chancellor. That's what went "wrong." But he said "no limitations" AFTER forming this coalition, knowing full well that Taurus will never be sent as long as he needs the SPD (Scholz's party) to stay in power.
Merz or Scholtz.. It's absolutely heartbreaking that more is not being done to bring justice to the Ukranian people. Help should be delivered and should have been for a long time.
Instead it's this constant geopolitcal dance from weak people in power
I didn't think I could feel more contempt for the German political establishment but here we are.
I don't know what Merz got told during his visit to the White House, but boy, has he turned his back on victims of aggressor states since. The US better have video of him on Epstein's Island in full action, because anything less and he's rolling over like a thumbleweed to US interests.
The most charitable interpretation: "These strikes are the only thing preventing the development of Iranian nukes"
You know, ignoring the facts that the only thing saying those are coming very soon is Israel, that there was a meeting planned that was actively sabotaged, and that if Merz is such a big fan of the non proliferation treaty that is so necessary for peace in the region, he should insist Israel go sign it first before worrying about its enforcement in Iran.
What the fuck kind of statement is that eh? Fucking hell man
A prep statement for the next one that will say more or less "look Israel helped us with Iran so they can do what they want in Gaza"
