I'd argue that people killing themselves in stupid ways is the traditional way to create new technology.
That was not the case in this circumstances.

This tool only died because he was too cheap to use the right materials. Not only was the carbon fiber hull a cost savings mechanism, he further cheaped out by using carbon fiber deemed unfit for airline use due to already passing it's expiry date.
but let's face it,

he thought being rich enough to build a sub made him smarter than the whole industry they told him exactly why it was a terrible design.
