In this community everyone is welcome to post links and discuss topics related to privacy.

- Posting a link to a website containing tracking isn't great, if contents of the website are behind a paywall maybe copy them into the post
- Don't promote proprietary software
- Try to keep things on topic
- If you have a question, please try searching for previous discussions, maybe it has already been answered
- Reposts are fine, but should have at least a couple of weeks in between so that the post can reach a new audience

While most free VPNs are scam, ProtonVPN is recommended by proivacytools.io and is available on F-Droid. But if you can, support them by paying for their services. Oh, and the free version doesn't work for torrenting, for obvious reasons.
protonvpn is dope but held my email account w them ransom and wont unlock it
I tried ProtonVPN a few months ago, it worked great for a while then suddenly stopped working entirely for me. I was using it to watch geo-restricted youtube content, so I assume either my browser wasn't allowing it to change my location, or it just stopped working.
That's a shame, cause among free vpns that I tried it had the best speed.
PTIO is muh for advice on anonymity or anything greater than generic "use X browser Y addon" advice, prefer any OpenVPN or Wireguard compatible VPN, lower priority to Bitmask based VPNs as they leak a bit unless you use force tunnel routing based on OS configuration.
For less of anonymity and more of just casual geoblock bypassing, Windscribe free addon with temp email gets you 10GB/mo and job done. It is not botnet unlike Hola or such harmful proxies.
I personally have stuck to both of these measures for the past 2-3 years. Any stricter anonymity work goes to specific darknets.
To be fair I've just recently come to take privacy seriously, and I don't know any better source than privacytools.io for general privacy Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
You will be far better off in this community, and on my privatelife (both Lemmy and Reddit).
r/privacy and r/privacytoolsio communities of such kind will push you into Apple meme or Brave scam or GrapheneOS toxic community with disregard for your needs, and teach you a bunch of nonsense.
You can also pick The Hated One or Techlore for starters. Michael Bazzell's podcast is nice to learn OSINT and OPSEC tactics in general.

You can use both on both platforms too. I mean, OpenVPN ones on GNU/Linux and Riseup on MS Windows.

I couldn't quite understand the site you provided though, I couldn't find a download link. That could just be me being blind, I've decided to go with Windscribe because I've used it before, but I'd much rather use something else.
The first is knowing your operating system to adapt a little tutorial.
BackplaneDNS needs OpenVPN client and Riseup VPN has its own one I will link in a little.
This, and if your goal is only geoblock bypassing and not wanting anonymity, please use Windscribe VPN addon (with throwaway temp email for 10GB/mo) over the above essential/critical free resources. Windscribe offers 20-30 country servers for free and can be used safely for watching Netflix, anime shows and accessing torrent sites.
RiseUp works hard to do what it does, and only 89 donators help donate and run it. Please do not waste their resources if you just want mere geoblock bypassing.
ProtonVPN (Free plan) is in my opinion the only true free VPN out there. It's owned by the reputable company of Protonmail. The free plan is paid for by the paid subscribers, they keep no logs and no bandwidth limits. There are of course a few limitations such as slower speeds, no P2P activities, no geo unblocking. Overall, it's a great service for being truly free.
Proton VPN
Only know 2 free VPN reliable, no logs and no tracking, but all free VPN are limited, some tracks and sell user data, some other has limited bandwith and server. The 2 good ones Proton VPN, swiss made by CERN cientifics, strong encryptation military level, no logs, no ads and no tracking,, no limits in data volumen, but only servers in three countrys and only in one PC ore Mobile. Windscribe, good privacy and no logs, some more servers but 10 Gb datalimit/month
Both good for occasional use, but for permanent uso don't exist aternative to paid VPN.
Riseup looks good
OpenVPN Client and server from freeopenvpn.org Alternatively CalyxVPN.

Free VPNs are suspicious and they might shamelessly use user data, just get a paid VPN.

I wouldnt trust any free one. The good ones are less than 5 dollars a month. if you're paying for internet already, its not much more to pay for privacy.
That is pretty weird.
In my case my family is the one paying but even when they want to see more films in the TV they don't pay for Netflix or similar which can be easily put :) (I would not accept it an would try replacements but it is an example).
My economy is measured at all.

How does that work? Why would using a VPN help with throttling?
Maybe OP means that their ISP is throttling certain websites like netflix or youtube.
AFAIK If you use a vpn your ISP would no longer be able to see what domains you are connecting to and hence not be able to throttle based on what site you are visiting
I dunno the proper terms, like I said I'm a bit of a noob about VPNs, but my speeds are definitely lower than they used to be, and they definitely have been getting slower. I've been told a VPN could help with that, but idk which one does that the best at my price point. (and yes, I understood before making the post that free VPNs aren't great nor private)

I recommend paying for a decent VPN - If the product is free it means YOU are the product. A VPN isn't that expensive for a yearly subscription (I'm paying $40US a year), and you can even pay monthly. I use PIA which is only ~$2.70 a month and most VPN's are under $5 a month.
Not everyone is getting their paycheck as $$

I'm from the US, but I've worked in freelance for most of my adult career - and have been out of work since shortly before the pandemic hit, my income is pitiful and far below minimum wage. I simply can't afford $5 a month, unless I start surviving on bread and water alone.
First class citizen* is more generic for every country.
You could find people in poor countries saying they can afford it and generalize that other can too (being a lie but destroying your point) and similar in rich countries with poor people.
Try to find a free VPS then install wireguard or shadowsocks on it.
