There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

I purchased a set of new ones because they were old and brittle and one rubber has already split.

One of the three (2 front 1 back) I had to break apart with a pipe wrench to get it off because it was completely stuck.

I can do you one duller. I got my wipers replaced last week and had someone else replace them.

Whoa there Indiana Jones! Too much excitement for me!

I'll get the tires replaced soon, not doing that myself 😁.

While we are talking about wipers, does anyone know how to identify quality ones?

The ones that come from the manufacturer last multiple years, but any replacement wipers that I've seen always start failing a couple of months later, even after cleaning them up, as another user suggested

Just go to the dealer and buy the OE blades, and enjoy them for many years. Bonus, they fit perfect without stupid adapters. On many brands, you can just replace the rubber insert as well. I used to have Honda blades on all my cars (Honda, Mazda, GM) because then they could use replaceable inserts that were dirt cheap.

I go by company, using brand ones like Bosch and not the cheapest option. Not sure if that's good or just wasting money.

Bosch makes good wipers. I can usually get at least a full year out of them before the rubber starts to get a little brittle from the sun and elements.

I only changed one this year, the other is going bad now. It's really weighing on my mind, but not enough to buy a second new one.

What kind of madman only replaces one wiper?

[–] hector@lemmy.today 7 points 1 month ago

The doctors do tell me there's something wrong with my brain... he he.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

I am unable to change just one, I have to change them all at once or it won't leave my mind.

Sounds like yours were pretty far gone, but for others- if they're just a little streaky, they're just really dirty. Wipe them with alchohol until the gook stops coming out of the rubber to bring them back to life.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Absolutely. It's a used car I purchased just recently because I need one due to changing employer. But that's another partly exciting story 😁

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Oooooh, I oughta do that soon.

[–] brendansimms@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

ya'll buying the full wipers every year instead of just buying new rubber and sliding it in?

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Hmm, I don't think I can change the rubber only on this model.

Yearly, hell no. When it doesn't wipe correctly anymore (due to the rubber, and cleaned of course)

I just realized the other day that I've only replaced the wipers on my truck once - when I bought it six years ago - and never since. They're still perfectly fine.

Probably has something to do with keeping it in a garage tent so it's mostly protected from the sun and freezing. I bet ice is what destroys them the most - especially everything you do to de-ice them besides just melting it.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 4 points 1 month ago

If you leave them alone when frozen they hold up alright. Mine I damaged cleaning the windshield when it was covered in ice and snow.

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Having ice regularly in Germany I can not confirm this. We also have ties to Greece and the rubber materials there have far far worse degradation. So maybe heat and sand?

Yes. Now this is a good dull post! All you overachievers out there . . . settle down.

Did you not read about the pipe wrench? 🫠 🤤
