Yeah I've seen that in Latin America too. Sometimes even without handrails lel.

Original meme with an image from The Crow: Salvation.

Originally this was meant to be a variation on a meme that was posted earlier. But it's not really obvious that the person in the picture was the person driving/ignoring the weird sounds. It looks more like that person was walking down the streets and ignored the sounds of a car crashing behind. I think it works either way, please let me know wat you think, I'm still pretty new to "the meme game".

On !sumo@lemmy.world the bimonthly 15-day tournament just ended, so the community will probably go dormant til the next one. We had a core group of 3 people posting, with a couple others joining in with discussion occasionally, which is pretty good for a niche community!

I use feeds, instead of just looking at "all":

idk but reading about it led me to the Aarne-Thompson-Uther index of story types which is available free online: https://edition.fi/kalevalaseura/catalog/book/763

The besieging king is there to recover his child. He had sworn a holy oath to "face hell on earth", without realizing he would need to literally do so. He orders his troops to fight their way through.

The troops suffer massive casualties and morale plummets. The king summons the greatest hero in his land, which rallies the troops. But the defending city makes unthinkable sacrifices to Satan, who eats the hero. The king summons the holiest Knight in his land. But the Knight falls to despair and the temptations of hell.

Then the king summons the most decadent libertine in his land, of whom it is said there is no Sin they have not committed.

Story idea: the city is besieged by an army. They dig tunnels to circumvent the walls, and discover--

Students at Bratsky Monastery in Kiev break for summer vacation.[1][2] The impoverished students must find food and lodging along their journey home.

Three students, the kleptomaniac theologian Khalyava, the merry-making philosopher Khoma Brut, and the younger rhetorician Tiberiy Gorobets, find wheat fields suggesting a nearby village. They leave the high road and walk for some time before reaching a farm with two cottages as night draws near. An old woman begrudgingly lodges the three travelers separately.

At night, the woman calls on Khoma and begins grabbing at him...

Nice throw by Fujinokawa (121kg/267lbs) vs Oho (178kg/392lbs) to get his Kachi-koshi.

Kind of a weird expression from Kirishima after the match. Looks like a mix of "Where'd that truck come from?" with "I still get to be champ, right?"

I'm not a big fan of the term "rivetheads", whenever I hear a word with the suffix "-head" I think of the time I was going to go to a Grateful Dead concert (a band which I knew little about) but my ride fell through. Just think. If my ride had come thru I mighta ended up a hippie!

A "raid train" is basically a sequence of streamers, the audience just go from one streamer to the next.

This weekend there's a "rivethead" raid train happening on twitch:

Rivetheads are fans of industrial and post-industrial music, particularly genres like electro-industrial, electronic body music (EBM), and industrial rock. They are a subculture that emerged in the late 1980s, associated with a specific style of music that is danceable and song-oriented, often considered "post-industrial". Rivethead culture often features a visual aesthetic with themes of dystopia, technology, and industrial imagery.

What to expect: Industrial & EBM: Electro-Industrial, Dark Electro, Industrial Rock, Rhythmic Noise, EBM, New Beat, Techno Body Music, Aggrotech, Industrial Bass, Industrial Techno...

(correction: https://raidpal.com/en/event/rivethead-ebm-industrial-raid-train)

Twitch is a corporate platform proceeding along the enshittification cycle. Basically they have occasional ads which are difficult to block, but I just take off my headphones at those times. I'm familiar with 3-4 of the DJs starting around 9pm Saturday and they're worth checking out. Anyway check this page out over the weekend, you should be able to see it thru here: (correcton: https://raidpal.com/en/event/rivethead-ebm-industrial-raid-train)

Mita throws Ura, who manages to hang on for a moment upside down with a bent back

Ura is such a joy. What was he trying to accomplish from this position? Pure instinct.

WMH is driven back but slaps Takanosho down and out at the edge as he dances on one foot.

Sure, it was great to be on a winning streak and an upward trajectory. But then you took everything they had to throw at you, suffered through a bunch of losses, kept on going when other folks woulda lost heart, and then you took out the tournament champion and let everybody know that you're STILL a force to be reckoned with. Somehow this win was a whole lot better than all the earlier wins.

Reposted with permission. I saw these elsewhere and emailed the artist/author who said it was OK to re-post them here. The oldest ones are from 2005, but there's still a lot of truth in them!

I usually post these on !bmoviebonanza@lemmy.world, but this is another non-B-movie showing! The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, Mar 22 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT which is 1am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live text commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows side-by-side on a computer. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.
  • it's usually streamed on https://miru.miyaku.media/ at that time

The film follows the story of Captain Sinbad ([John Philip] Law) as he embarks on a dangerous quest to find the Fountain of Destiny after discovering a magical golden amulet. Joined by a vizier and a slave girl ([Caroline] Munro), he must battle the evil sorcerer Koura ([Tom] Baker) and mythical creatures to unlock the amulet's powers before Koura can use them for evil.

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad premiered on 25 December 1973 and received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its stop-motion effects [by Ray Harryhausen] and fantastical adventure elements; however, some critics noted flaws in the storyline and character development. Commercially, the film emerged as a box-office success, grossing over $11 million worldwide against a budget of approximately $982,351. Moreover, it won the first Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film.[3]

Hard rock / metal song with Violent J of ICP contributing to the vocals. From 2023.

Writhe and Shine makes fun of the alternative underground scene from the inside and shows us that no matter how much black we wear or how moody we seem, we can still laugh at ourselves. Running off and on since 1998, it has been compared to The Addams Family and Cheers. The series follows a group of friends that work at and run The Bastille, the only Goth club in the historic and iconic city of New Orleans.

You can read their comic strip archive for more. Looks like the artist/writer eventually shifted to other work, though. More info about the artist:

Edit notes: this one was simple, just rearranging from 1x4 to 2x2 and adding background and titles.

Day 11 of the March sumo tournament in Japan finished a couple of hours ago. The tourney lasts for 15 days. So this is the perfect time to catch up and start following!

Live / Replay:

  • try searching on twitch, there are usually at least 3 different streamers providing live video feeds with English commentary, and it's fun to have a community to chat with in real time. The top Makuuchi matches start around 3am US Eastern Time though. At least one of the streamers does replays all day, usually of the entire day (including lower ranks).

Video Clips:

  • youtuber DonDon makes a daily video of the "best 10" matches listed in English with replays including on-screen English analysis; those are listed here: https://www.youtube.com/@dondonsumo2/videos Besides the "best 10" of the top Makuuchi tier, DonDon also makes a "best 5" of the second Juryo tier.

  • NHK makes a daily video that has all the top-tier Makuuchi bouts with English spoken commentary. This video is replayed on their web site several times during the following day (kind of like an old-fashioned TV station); you can see the schedule here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/ look for "Grand Sumo highlights." After a day of scheduled replays, the video is put up for "on demand" access here: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/ and (possibly with additional delay) here: https://www.youtube.com/@NHKWORLDJAPAN/videos

  • NHK immediately posts individual videos of each top-tier bout listed in Japanese with Japanese commentary.

click here for instructions to see the NHK Japanese videos

They are re-doing their Japanese website. I THINK that to see the latest videos on the NHK site in Japanese, you look here: https://www.nhk.jp/g/ts/Z8WRRJ9K96/blog/bl/pm1VNbJpWQ/bp/pExrRxao2y/ and click on the topmost link that says "NHK ONE", it should look like this:

Click "I understand" to acknowledge that you're not in Japan (lel) and then scroll down til you see this button:

it might look like this:

click on that and you should see all the videos?!

  • JSA immediately posts individual videos of each of the highest-ranked 10+ matches listed in Japanese with no commentary, here: https://www.youtube.com/@sumo-video/videos

  • For the listings in Japanese, try automated translations if there's a lot of text. Alternately, look for something like: 9月14日 which in this case refers to the 9th month and the 14th day (September 14th). Automated translation doesn't work that well on sumotori names, but this is a great opportunity to learn them by sight! (The JSA web site has pictures of them all.)

Additional fan youtube channels (I haven’t checked them out too thoroughly)
