Really a question of whether you still trust the state apparatus to protect you and your loved ones from physical violence. For the right, the need to protect themselves was never anything but a bogeyman dreamt up by gun manufacturers and racist opportunists. Of the left gun owners I know, liberals, Anarchists, Marxists, etc. They have a far more grounded view of guns, and see them much more for the tool that they are.
