Keeping it 100% real here I agree with giving the kid time. As a 4th round rookie he has a very rare opportunity to showcase why he’s worthy of that time. In that span he’s had flashes of being a competent starting QB in the league and ton of rookie hiccups. From what I’ve seen the kid lacks mobility and holds on to the ball too long. He’s made some incredible throws and doesn’t stare down receivers which is a positive but he has also shown his accuracy and decision making isn’t the best. I want him to start the rest of the season but we shouldn’t continue with the assumption that he’s going to develop into a QB that can elevate us to a championship.
Las Vegas Raiders
That’s something’s that kinda been a deal-breaker for me. AOC runs like a duck. Every good modern QB has some element of extending plays with their legs or is a scrambling weapon. AOC is neither.
IMO he is staring down receivers - which is part of the reason he had 3 picks yesterday. Don’t think he’s going through progressions well atm
Still agree with giving him some time tho
If the raiders had an average QB this year they'd be a surefire playoff team. That's the issue with AOC. Adam's is open on seemingly every single play and nobody on the team can get the ball to him consistently. He should absolutely get the remainder of the year to prove himself but he needs to look much better to prevent them from taking a QB early in the draft next year
It’s not hate to not like a player or to criticise his performance. Maybe rather than objecting to it you could make a case to keep him. Not this coach speak ‘fine tune’ and ‘real deal’ talk. What do you think he offers as a starting QB in 2024? Like actually get into the weeds here.
We’re not moving off him this year but looking at the games he’s played so far it’s been underwhelming. He’s had two good quarters of offence and they both came against the Giants.
He is overthrowing his receivers, he is holding the ball too long and not going through his progressions quickly. He also isn’t good rolling out of the pocket.
He looked bad against the Jets and while they are a good defence their own incredibly shit offence did mean we had opportunities to wear them out (and eventually JJ broke off that big run to set up our TD play).
Today he looked lost and while I believe Miami have been a somewhat underrated defence AOC was gifted great starting field position by our defence and he didn’t do anything with it. And before you blame the play calling, once they opened the passing game up that’s when he was overthrowing balls, putting it danger and turning it over. The conservative play calling may have been to try to limit mistakes.
As for being a rookie, so? He’s 3-6 TD to INTs, that’s shit no matter when you do it. Tommy DeVito, the meme he beat, is 6-3 TD to INT and the Giants are a much worse team than we are. Tyson Bagent currently has a season completion percentage of 65.7 and 3 TD to INTs. Aidan only has a 62.1 completion percentage and he has Tae to throw to. Bagent also has a better season passer rating (71.4 vs 70.6, both bad but yikes).
So no, weren’t not sleeping on him. He looks like backup come third string guy.
He’s also 25, he’s the same age as Justin Herbert, heck he’s only a year younger than Sam Darnold and he’s two years older than Brock Purdy.
We’re not going to cut him but today was the first time he played a complete team which can compete in all 3 phases.
He’s got the Chiefs twice, the Vikings (you want a diamond in the rough, Josh Dobbs), Colts (Minshew is trying to make the case he can start somewhere next season) and the chargers and donkeys. He needs to win some (half) of these games. He needs to win 5 if we’re thinking about playoffs.
These are the test games. If he looks like he did the last two weeks? We’re trading up for a QB because we we’ve shackled to mediocrity at the position for way too long.
This was said last week, although not as thorough.
It’s the whole offensive scheme and system they’re in, honestly we’re playing a game of what if’s at this point and so far offense isn’t gonna do anything. No progress since last year. It’s gonna be real tough to revamp it, best option trade Adam’s and get a shot at a QB since everyone thinks that will save us and have him compete with AOC, polish up defense
The scheme doesn’t negate some of his flaws. He has room to improve on them, but you can’t bank on that happening going into next season.
Its kinda hate inasmuch as its unfair to judge him in toto right now when he's still developing, with only a couple actual starts on his resume. Saying the mistakes he's making now define who he's going to be forever is simply not true.
If by the end of the season he's still making the same mistakes and not showing any growth, then you can start to make those criticisms. But almost no one is going to immediately jump in and be an NFL QB1 right out of the box, in the scenario he was in
Aidan only has a 62.1 completion percentage and he has Tae to throw to.
Doesn't really matter when he has no pass protection.
I honestly don't believe mcdipshit did much to help him work through his flaws either. He got reps in preseason sure, but Hoyer was entrenched as QB2. So Farva has legitimately only had a couple weeks to gain chemistry with the #1 receivers. He is more accurate than his numbers show and knowing the speed and catch radius of his receivers is really crucial on deep balls. He can make the throws, but he's been fighting an uphill battle this entire year.
While I'm not saying he's elite, I am saying he's capable of making every NFL throw. Right now though he's got third string experience + three games. I'm not even sure I want to count the chargers game because he was set up to fail because mcdumbass didn't prep him to start that week. We'll know by the end of the season what we have, but right now we're still dealing with the stink of mcshitforbrains.
Pretty much this guy is saying put in Jimmy g and we heading to the Super Bowl.
Damn dude. It’s the hope that kills you and you just killed the hope. In all seriousness, well put. He’s very raw at a not very raw age and the verdict is still out. He obviously isn’t showing signs of a missed prodigy that slipped to us, but he has shown some positive tools. I imagine he’s feeling a lot of pressure. It seems this team can do that to guys with regularity. Good offensive players come here and suddenly they aren’t the same. I think this fanbase has a way of adding extra pressure because we’ve grown impatient and been that way for so long and for good reason.
He probably isn’t the answer, but no harm in giving him the reps. I just hope this doesn’t turn into a case of our defense suddenly being amazing and the offense unable to score because we are cursed with flip flopping which one can perform on a given day and hardly ever put both good forms out there the same day.
Perfectly written, thank you. I agree 100.
I didn’t see any hate at all. I criticized his play because it wasn’t great… Sure he looked “fine” most of the time but he missed wide open throws and had 3 picks… I don’t think anyone was hating him. He’s a 4th round rookie. There weren’t big expectations (at least from me)…
there was plenty of hate. the game day thread is always full of hate.
I wasn’t on the game thread. I didn’t see that. You know how that thread goes though. During the game is an emotional time. A lot of overreaction then.
farva is now not the future
People are just frustrated
Realistically, its not even a question. We're not going back to Garoppolo this season, unless AOC gets injured. We're not pulling a Browns and signing a Joe Flacco in desperation either. AOC will get to the end of the season to audition for the starting role next year. So he'll either show steady growth, or he wont, and we dont have any decisions to make one way or the other till next spring
I think context is important when discussing AOC.
He was drafted at the end of the 4th round, and was never meant to be a franchise QB for us or any other team.
We completely shit the bed in the beginning of our season, and so they could afford to give him the rest of the season to 'show off' and earn his spot. AP gave him a blank check, as he does with all of his players, and told him to write his own way. If he doesn't, that's completely on him.
However, again since he's a 4th rounder, he would need to light the world on fire in order to earn the starting position and he certainly hasn't done that so far.
He has been 'fine,' which again is not good enough to win a spot as a 4th round QB.
I don't mind them giving him the entire rest of the season to figure it out, but unless he is actively winning games for us, we need to take a QB with our 1st pick next year.
Nobody is hating O'Connell. There's nothing wrong with wanting to upgrade the QB position. If a QB comes up during the draft, especially if he's the best player available, pull the trigger and let them compete. Example: the chiefs had Alex Smith and were a playoff team with him. Mahomes became available, and Mahomes sat and learned his rookie year. I do feel we do need a QB with mobility.
Your QB better be 1999 Kurt Warner in their rookie year or they suck and will always suck! We need to move on from non-1999 Kurt Warners and draft a FrAnCHise QB. Hall of fame QBs are dime a dozen, that’s why so many teams have QBs that would have been on the practice squad in 1999 starting, and losing a 40 year old to a torn achilles doesn’t hamper your need to bring him back next season./s
It’s way too early to decide anything. The QB position is difficult, you rarely see a rookie light it up there first year and the ones that do usually fall into a sophomore jinx. Peyton Manning was 3-13 with a 72 QB rating his first season where he played and practiced as QB1 the whole year. AOC has played 4 games through a lot of turmoil. His positives are he is smart, resilient, accurate with the football and his teammates respect him. His negatives are he’s a rookie so he’s not getting through his progressions, he’s not mobile and he lacks pocket awareness. I think he can develop but we will see. The people who are really negative on him are obsessed with having a mobile athletic QB. It’s what’s in vogue at the moment but everyone forgets that the mobile QBs all become pocket passes in a few years out of necessity. They get the crap beat out them the first few seasons and end up hurt. I’d rather have the guy who starts as a pocket QB, he will develop faster because he has to.
His overthrown have killed us. Especially on 4th down. Do not overthrow the WR on 4th down. It's simple. It's 4th down. Give SOMEONE, ANYONE, a chance. Zero reason to overthrow.on 4th down
A 4th round rookie, who didn’t get to start running with the 1st string until the start of this month, working with a rookie HC and OC, using McDummy’s 20 year old Patriot playbook. As far as I’m concerned he’s doing pretty well, all things considered. The people in the building seem to trust him, so what do a bunch of people on the internet know that they don’t.
A lot of people have 0 patience, and if they’re not a day 1 killer, they consider it a waste and are ready to move on. They want AOC to play like Stroud, who’s was selected 2nd overall, and has been playing first string since the start of the season with a playbook designed to work with him, instead of trying to cram him into a scheme. It’s nonsense.
Nothing worse for a team than a QB carousel. Keep the man. There's no guarantee Caleb Williams or Bo Nix won't be busts. 1st round QBs are hit and miss.
Terrible qb play is much worst for a team
He has a lot of potential as a passer. He has very little potential as an athlete. The former is more important but the latter does limit his ability to carry a team.
We're in a flexible situation, we can draft a QB early next year, or stick with Aidan if we don't like what falls to us. Either way, we need OL, and we need a couple of cheap replacements for Jacobs. (Don't get me wrong, I love Jacobs, but it doesn't make sense for us to pay a RB $12M, and our current backups are not running back by committee caliber.)
Keep him but draft a QB to start over him
Everyone here hates everything, bunch of bitter fucks there’s not much to get
Give the kid time, draft an Oline to protect him or whoever gets the job next.
He gets 6 more games. If he doesn't make progress I guarantee we either bring in someone again or draft a qb in rounds 1-2.
Yes keep him. As a nice backup capable of spot starts.
Should still absolutely draft a qb early.
It was his 4th start. Wasn’t expecting much, and he legitimately looked like a 4th round rookie making his 4th start.
All we can do is watch for steady improvement. Garoppolo is riding pine until the season is out because he DOES NOT give us any greater chance at victory than AOC. At least with AOC there’s the unknown.
From my eyes: AOC has horrible footwork and a pretty bad throwing motion. Contrary to what most of you are saying, he is actively progressing through his reads in a timely manner. His awkward base and slow delivery are whats affecting his accuracy more often than not. He’s also not great under pressure (big red flag) and lowers his eyes once he feels the rush. The lack of mobility is a grievance, but that’s never been his game. If he keeps his eyes up against the rush and buys time (see Mayer TD vs Jets), he can operate in the NFL like that for a long time.
All in all, I think he’s got a lot of fundamental work that needs to be done on his mechanics, and he needs more reps against pressure to learn to play under it.
Being a zero star recruit and having to walk on at Purdue would kind of lead one to believe that he’s never worked with a high-level QB coach, as many top prospects do. If he’s hungry and confident enough, he may seek help much like Josh Allen did after his sophomore season (another basically zero star recruit).
He could be good, if he shows progress, I’d be willing to bet on him for another year PROVIDED he gets coaching on his mechanics and there’s another QB there to push him.
I feel, I think, I think, I think .
That's what this post says. Farva is a 4th round rookie playing with an OC that's never called NFL games in his life. That's it. That's the truth. Could he be a serviceable player one day? Sure. Is it WAAAAY top much to expect him to lead this team to the playoffs? Also true.
The dude just faced one of the great defensive minds in Fangio. Simple as that. Jacobs had 39 yards on 14 carries. So they were dropping 7 into coverage.
I dont think AOC is the guy going forward, I think he's got a pretty good NFL career ahead of himself, but I don't think he will be a top qb, ever. He won't even sniff the top. And that's totally OK. The Raiders deserve a quarterback that makes the rest of the league both scared and jealous. They can possibly draft one next year.
Way too early to tell what we have with AOC. If rookie Peyton Manning was starting for us right now the same people would be saying, “oh he will be a serviceable backup, blah blah blah.” Until you get solid OLine play, you never know what you have in a qb. He just got done facing 2 top defenses and 1 decent defense the past 3 weeks, missing his starting blindside tackle, and amid all the changes, has played OK. That makes me take a wait and see approach to the kid.
This is nonsense. No one would call manning, the #1 overall pick, a backup after a couple of starts. AOC is not manning
I saw russel wilson making the same mistakes on the same day.
Of course we’re going to keep him, but not as the starter. He’s old, statuesque, and has accuracy issues. A QB is a must in the draft
Y'all are overly emotional. Anyone being critical and not announcing how aoc is the qb of the future isn't "hating"
In his 4 starts he has
a 60% completion rating, 2 TD's, 5 INTs, 4 fumbles, a QB rating of 71.8 and averages 218 yards a game for a y/a of 6.1.
Those numbers are basically identical to Zach Wilson and Bryce Young through their first 4 games
Now hopefully he can improve but there really isn't much that he's giving us to be hopeful about. He doesn't flash elite athletic traits, he isn't processing the game at a high level, he's 25, the only thing he has going for him over someone like Jimmy G is he can throw further, but he still doesn't have elite arm strength or accuracy.
Yes he has excuses thanks to whatever the hell Josh McDaniels was doing but 1 TD a game simply isn't going to cut it in the NFL.
This was a winnable game that we could have skated with if he was able to put together more than one TD drive or hell just kept the FG's coming.
I think it's obvious we're rolling with him for the rest of the year but he's got a hell of a leap to make.
He's played 4(?) Games. Let him play and learn. #1 pick Lawrence was asscheeks for like 2 seasons before he joined the mid tier. Do I think he's gonna be a stud?? Not so much, but if he can be mid, ill take it (unless we can somehow GET a stud, obv)
I’m totally fine with him being a backup but all I keep hearing is “oh there are some really good to great QBs in this years draft!!” Mark please don’t fucking listen to OP and go draft one of those GOOD QBs please. Sick of being the only team without an elite QB lol smh.
Also, he just went up against a DOLPHINS DEFENSE FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS. Dude took the challenge with 4th and 2 at the 40. He tried to air out a 60-yd pass to win it. He’s got balls. Give them time to drop.
Keep him on the bench.
I don’t understand people saying he doesn’t have what it takes!? Really? 4 games is enough to evaluate his ceiling? I’ve watched a couple games of Bryce Young and he doesn’t look anymore impressive than AOC, but he gets a pass because he’s 1st round material. Everyone needs to chill out and let this kid have the rest of the season and then maybe we can have a meaningful discussion/debate whether or not he deserves a nod as QB1 next season. Also, I’m not opposed to drafting a QB for competition at that position and based on AOC’s track record, he doesn’t mind it either, because he’s got that work horse mentality.
He plays the rest of the season. Draft and sign QBs. Let them compete.
QB is not the position to go with the “He’s good enough and cheap” position unless you’re someone like SF who has an absolutely loaded roster and proven offensive Guru that can help the QB thrive. The Raiders should aggressively look for a QB in this draft and if they find one that is gettable and better for the team than AOC, that is priority number one.
First major Keys to building a team: Get a QB (_______) Get to the QB (Crosby) Protect your QB (Miller)
Here’s the deal. AOC will be a starter in 2 or 3 years. That was the plan. He was supposed to be behind Jimmy G then take over after Gs contract was up. He’s been thrown into a fucked scenario and he’s doing well.
I don’t think we need to draft a QB, I think we need a vet with good production to feed the ball to our offense and make better decisions. If we continue beefing up the defense we’re contenders by next year.
The question is who do we put in to start in front of AOC. Unpopular opinion, but it looks like Dobbs is going to stay with Vikings, and Justin Fields is getting cut by the Bears. We should pick up Fields or Cousins, and go draft heavy on defense and OLine- then get some wins over the next three years and left AOC take over right behind that.
Oh and get a better OC.
OP is the worst type of fucking raider fan I swear smh. How the fuck can you “hate” on your own team? Smh you type fans the worst because everything is emotional with you lol, since you got an emotional connection with AOC we should keep him smh. I’m sick of the raiders always settling for scraps, GO DRAFT A GENERATIONAL QB PLEASE FOR ONCE IN MY LIFETIME! I’m sick of getting these fringe ass QBs then gotta hear Reddit telling me to “stop hating and let him cook” lol stfu. I like AOC, seems like a nice guy but he’s not the QB of the future for the raiders and anyone with eyes should be able to see this.
