In some religions it's also the reward for adultery. Usually only for women though.

I feel like they're still improving, but we're slowly hitting the point of diminishing returns. I think the next big leap will require a real breakthrough rather than just feeding even more data into our existing models.

It's a language model and it's already near-flawless at language. If we actually want a knowledge model, we probably need to try something different.

We punish people for speeding, driving under the influence, or texting while driving because those behaviors are reckless and we want to deter them. That makes sense.

But what about a freak accident where the driver did nothing wrong? Should they still be punished just because it happened to be them in the wrong place at the wrong time? In my opinion, no. If they didn't do anything reckless or negligent, there's no reason to think punishment would teach them anything useful. At that point it just feels like we're satisfying our need for vengeance rather than serving any logical purpose.

With a self-driving car, every accident would basically fall into that "freak accident" category. The car wasn't distracted, drunk, or driving recklessly. Maybe you could argue the company should pay compensation to the victim's family or at least cover medical costs if the person survived as a gesture of good will - but I don't see how the company would be morally responsible in a way that justifies fining or punishing them.

Just thinking aloud here. I don't know what the actual answer is.

For me, intelligence isn't about what someone knows - it's about how they think. There's no single thing someone could say or do that would instantly make me see them as intelligent. It would have to be the consistent demonstration of logical, rational thinking over a long stretch of time.

Frankly, it's way easier to spot stupidity, and a huge number of people can hardly wait to broadcast their ignorance.

These autonomous vehicle trolley problems go just as deep as you want them to - and there are no real right or wrong answers for any of it.

What if the car is faced with a situation where it can either hit a pedestrian to save the passenger or drive over a cliff and save the pedestrian by sacrificing the passenger?

What if a collision is unavoidable but it has the option to choose between hitting a child or hitting a granny?

It's only a matter of time until we have self-driving vehicles that are far safer drivers than humans - but they still won't be flawless, and accidents will keep happening. Can we live with there being no one to blame for it? Or do we just go back to human drivers with higher accident rates - at least then we have someone to point our fingers at?

I don't think either Netanyahu or the Iranian government are reliable sources of information, so what they say doesn't really tip the scales for me one way or the other. That said, the UK mainland is only about 600 km farther from Iran than Diego Garcia is - so if it really was them targeting that base, they probably figured it was within range.

I could make a lot of money if I knew. I just don't and neither does anyone else.

While housing is undeniably getting less affordable, it's still something you can influence a lot through individual choices. My sister and I live in the same city. Her house cost 300k€ and mine cost 100k€. Both are located in similar neighbourhoods too - my house is just a lot smaller and older.

1 day old account with 100 comments being obnoxious. I see what's going on in here.

Based on the information so far it seems that Iran does have the capability to reach the UK with their ballistic missiles but there's no clear indication that they're intending to do so. However, if they did the UK wouldn't have a great way of protecting itself from those strikes.

I've spent close to three years now blocking the worst users and communities, tweaking my mile-long list of content filters - and even after all that, this site is barely usable.

It's honestly staggering how much content gets voted to the front page that doesn't interest me at all. Even when something does catch my eye, I close the thread after 10 seconds of reading the comments. There's just no point in trying to have any honest discussion here.

I simply have no theory of mind for the kind of person who actually enjoys the "default Lemmy experience." Sometimes when I browse someone's profile, wondering whether to block them, I see that virtually every single one of their replies is in threads whose headlines contain terms that trigger my filters. It's bizarre. It's almost like some people enjoy being angry all day every day - or if not, at least feel obligated to be.

That is a factual statement. They do have such weapons. The question is whether they intend to target Europe with them or not and for that there's no evidence.

The sign says "Pet cart - Your friend is warmly welcome here as well."

All the pictures are from this same store.

Building 36 identical shelving brackets wasn't particularly interesting I must say. Thankfully I had the foresight to set up jigs for cutting and assembling the pieces.

Pats on the back to whoever knows what these poles are for.

The one I'm drinking right now is 6.76€ and the cheapest one is 1.28€.

First of all - what a price difference. Secondly, it's actually not bad. It does have that faint "cheap coffee" taste, but after a few cups I barely notice it anymore.

The real question is: is the tradeoff worth it? Do I give up a few percent of enjoyment on every single cup just to save the equivalent of a month's grocery bill yearly? I'm not in any dire financial spot - frugality is basically a hobby/lifestyle for me at this point - but it's getting rarer and rarer to find ways to pocket savings of this level anymore.

Bluetooth not working at all, internet not working at all, and even the setting for HDMI audio output is gone. The settings page is just empty.

I managed to load an older kernel(?) and got Bluetooth and internet working again, but still no audio. I'm as much of a novice at running Linux as you can get. I've been trying to troubleshoot this with the help of an LLM, but I have no idea what I'm doing here.

Any help, please?

The new one is the one on the top.

I still want to seal that gap between the two rear fenders but I ran out of materials.

It's protecting the inner-tube from rubbing against the screw heads of my DIY studs. Did the same thing last year and it worked great.

This happened a while back. Just something I thought I'd share.

I work as a tradesman on construction sites. There's this electrician - a few years older than me - who I'd never met on any previous jobs. Never talked to him before, but I'd noticed he always had this annoyed, kinda smug look on his face and gave off pretty toxic vibes, in my opinion. The guy never even seemed to greet anyone in the mornings and just didn't seem like a nice person to be around.

One day I'm up on a scissor lift working on the ceiling, with my tools and supplies sitting on the ground next to the lift. This same sparky comes over to work on something nearby, decides my stuff is in his way, and starts aggressively kicking it aside - visibly pissed off.

I don't react right away, but a bit later I climb down, go over to him, and ask him to step aside for a second because I need to ask him something. He comes over looking completely clueless about what's up. I then threw a perfect uppercut... just kidding. I asked if everything was alright and whether I'd unknowingly wronged him in some way. He said no - looking confused - so I explained that I felt a little disrespected by the way he angrily kicked my tools around like that and just wanted to know if it was because of something I'd done.

He acknowledged that he'd acted unprofessionally and apologized.

To this day he greets me every single time we cross paths.

I'll see about the compost lid some other day I guess.

Most bridges here do, and often when one needs to be demolished and rebuilt, the military blows it up just for practice.

Edit: Source for the sceptics

The deep demolition, which became a central element in Finnish post-war demolition tactics, and especially the development of readiness to counter surprise attacks that emerged as a threat scenario in the 1960s, received significant support immediately after the wars. The decision concerning structural demolition preparations for bridges was made on January 15, 1946. These preparations meant building charge wells, charge chambers, charge pipes, and charge hooks. Authorities responsible for constructing bridges were required to include the aforementioned structures in their plans, which significantly improved the readiness to destroy the bridges.

If it was not possible to place the charge space inside the abutment or pier, charge hooks could be embedded in the supports during the casting phase, to which the charges could then be attached.

Not that people having already heard them has ever stopped me from re-telling them anyway.

I'm thinking stuff like a magnifying glass for roasting ants (don't actually do this) or those big hair-clip claws.
