Went camping for a night out in the remote Amazon jungle, accompanied by local guides. The next morning we were trekking and heard a strange buzzing and hissing sound. It filled the rainforest and sounded like we stumbled into a witches coven or something. There was loud whooping and whistling, but more than anything - this ominous chorus of sustained droning.

Turned out it was a pack of giant Amazon river otters in the water. These guys get as big as 6 ft. The sound was freaky and they were bearing their fangs at us trying to intimidate, swimming in an agitated manner. No doubt they could have ripped us to shreds if they wanted to. We had higher ground and kept our distance. I managed to take a short video.

After a couple minutes they climbed out of the water and galloped into the jungle. And I mean it when I say galloped. We couldn’t believe how fast they could move on land.

I firmly believe that these are the last animals you would want to come face to face with in all of the Amazon. I would rather face a jaguar than a mob of angry giant river otters.

Short Video (OC): https://files.catbox.moe/phsta3.mov Wish the phone picked up the low end of the droning better.

I actively avoid videos with those awful thumbnails, but I figure it must result in a net gain in clicks.

there are certain species with a darker side—for example, carnivorous caterpillars that eat aphids, butterflies that drink alligator tears, or "vampire" moths that feed on livestock blood. Add to that list the newly discovered "bone collector" caterpillar, which conducts daring raids on spider webs for sustenance, camouflaging itself in the body parts of already-consumed insects to avoid being eaten.

If you're going to live in Smaug's lair, you'd better look like treasure."

Dude this is natureismetal micro edition!

Yeah I’ve been saying they keep coming from the reddthat instance lol. These < 1 day old accounts whose first and only post is on AskLemmy. After that the post gets deleted. Idk what that’s all about

You gotta make up bullshit excuses for banishing them from the community lol. I watched this whole thing in a Mormon documentary. Always questioned how that works. So these creepy old men take all these wives, even young ones, like young people aren’t going to be crushing on and ogling each other and eventually realizing it’s all rigged

And funny how it’s never the other way where women can take multiple husbands🤔

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Definitely loss of relationships. Not romantic, but friends and family drifting apart. Wondering how they are, dwelling, trying to figure out where things went wrong.

What a short effective trailer! I’m immediately interested

A string of recent killings across the United States have been tied to a fringe online group described as a “death cult.” The complex web of violence includes a samurai sword attack in Vallejo, the stabbing of a landlord and a deadly shootout near the Canadian border.

Many of the people linked to the violence are connected to a fringe online community known as the “Zizians,” the investigation found. The group is a radical offshoot of the Rationalism movement, focusing on matters such as veganism and artificial intelligence destroying humanity. The group is apparently named after a person known as “Ziz,” whom Open Vallejo identified as a former tenant on Lind’s Vallejo property.

Saltwater corrodes firefighting equipment and may harm ecosystems, especially those like the chaparral shrublands around Los Angeles that aren’t normally exposed to seawater. Gardeners know that small amounts of salt – added, say, as fertilizer – does not harm plants, but excessive salts can stress and kill plants.

I can't believe this happened! This is such a mindfuck. How do you fire a GM after one year? No matter what happened with the Chargers, I thought Telesco did a good job actually, especially drafting.
I'm thinking this must mean the Raiders already have a coach coming that wants their own GM, someone with the cache to make that kind of demand, a la Pete Carroll, Ben Johnson, Bill Belichik (ugh) or Gruden.

Lions OC Ben Johnson — the top candidate in this year’s cycle — is scheduled to interview with four teams and has set up virtual meetings as follows:

  • Raiders & Patriots on Friday
  • Bears & Jaguars on Saturday

The Raiders have fired coach Antonio Pierce following a trying season, despite a flurry at the end, per me, @TomPelissero and @MikeGarafolo

One and done for Pierce, and Las Vegas is open once again.

His answer is the octopus. What say you?
