Well when one runs an instance of 1000+ mau they need to accept it's not "their house" anymore. Those that don't, quickly end up in shit storms against their communities ๐Ÿ˜…

It's ok, I don't mind people challenging me.

[โ€“] [email protected] 1 points 15 minutes ago

Speaking from extensive experience, they cannot and most people rely on us to handle it for them.

Im leaving his comment up in order to respond but I don't want to rehash that discussion here.

The reason this decision was taken was not just this one discussion. It was because that person has too many red flags for my liking on the stuff they would defend, always juuuuust skirting the line of what is acceptable discourse here.

Of course I see your point you're trying to make , but I also think you're naive and don't understand the repercussions of what you're suggesting

Mate, if you don't like the way we run things, go somewhere else. You're not forced to be here.

Personal cp filtering automation and a shared blacklist

Oh just those, eh?

Just goes to show how little idea you have how difficult this problem is.

They've been on the sidebar since forever ๐Ÿ’€

Nobody is stopping people from expressing their views, but we're not obligated to view them, or give them a platform to say them.

Try selecting every language

What are your language settings?

I think so. I should have set it correctly but I'll recheck...

This week on "Unexpected Downsides To #Cryptocurrency":

Did you realize that you can't reject #blockchain transactions and therefore anyone who wants to harass you can more or less freeze your "bank account" at an exchange like #Coinbase instantly just by either:

a) sending a euro through a sanctioned mixer service like #TornadoCash before sending it to you or

b) sending a few cents to a sanctioned terrorist wallet before sending you a single cent

The automated systems used by Coinbase will immediately notice that you have interacted with suspicious or sanctioned wallets and Coinbase, which, like all crypto companies, spends as little as possible on customer support, will lock your account until you produce a passport for the person who sent you that tiny amount of money (often for months).

These so called "dust attacks" constitute revolutionary new vectors in harassment.

Long-form analysis on the #50501movement. I found this thread on mastodon interesting, so I thought I'd crosspost here as well

As a result, our instance https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ got 625 new user registrations (of which 536 where accepted) in the past 24 hours! And the registrations are not abating even now. We still get like 10 new ones per hour!

I suspect this is probably the largest advertisement, for lemmy specifically, since the main reddit blackouts 1.5 years ago.

Have your own instances also seen an influx of new users?

Surprising that this bug hit only NSFW and LGBT subs no? Almost sounds like there's a shortlist to run through with such scripts.

Context

As mentioned earlier we were looking for some new mods to join the team. Plenty of you applied for which I am grateful. After checking your profiles and your applications a bit, I decided to go with the following peeps

As is typical with the way we run this instance, feel free to take bold actions, so long as we can reverse them later if they cause a problem. The idea is that y'all should feel empowered to take direct action to improve things without having to ask for permission.

Welcome to the crew!
