  3. Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, see the list of support communities and tools for finding communities below

There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

I've been using Lemmy since last August and I find it very useful for sharing articles.

Most of the time articles are very easy to upload with no real defects. However, there are a few websites, such as apnewsDOTcom that send data that ends up as giving "Just a moment" for the headline, and no thumbnail image. [see https://lemmy.ml/post/26652484]

Where would I look in the apnews webpages to find the data elements that need fixing, and what software would I need to enter the fixed data into Lemmy, so that the Lemmy post looks right?

Thanks in advance for any help I get for this.

Pun intended, but still a serious question.

Would a neutron matter? (Pun also intended, but also serious)

I speak Spanish but primarily speak in English for the main reason that I haven’t seen an active LGBT group in anything but English. If not, I’ll make one!

(There appears to be 2 recent ones in Galician and Norwegian 🇳🇴, too, if you’re interested 😮)

Have been thinking of reducing hair length as it's nearing summer in my place and the temperature is rising. I generally choose a shorter(relatively) hairstyle during the summer and monsoon, because it feels cooler in the former and easier to dry in the second one.

Was thinking about it and remembered reading on how the hair on the head helps to reduce effects of UV rays. I don't stay out in the sun too much, so likely not an issue for me.

Started thinking about what the range of best summer hairstyles would be for people of different hair type(straight, curly, wavy/inbetween both) etc. and asking about it here to see how/what other people on think about it.

Even better if you can provide your own understanding of its meaning.

Mine would be :

"Nothing kills a man as much as being forced to represent a country" (and err considering the context, I must stress it has nothing to do with the current US shitshow), by a WW1 soldier, illustrator and writer named Jacques Vaché.

For me it just means being forced into representing a group (national, of course, but maybe also social, racial, sexual, professional, any kind of group) or defining one's identity only by reference to a group is to be avoided at all costs.

Note : Its not the same, imho, as engaging in a collective struggle or defense against a common oppression.

How about you?

I want to shop local, but when I google locally owned stores they're all boutique-type stuff or restaurants. How do I find deodorant and a bag of sugar?

Think this is because I just updated fonts-noto-color-emoji?

Well, in any event, this is an outrage I shall not stand for! 😉

EDIT: Well, this is what happens when you aim for Vietnamization, I guess. 🤷

EDIT EDIT: Using the menu editor on Linux Mint Cinnamon, you can usually edit the comments for an app by clicking on its preferences, and ironically I was doing that to mark the apps that are US-based with the flag as a reminder to find alternatives to them!

I just realized my library card gives me access to an app I can borrow magazines from. And as someone trying to do less Lemmy scrolling at night and more long form reading, I’m wondering where to start.

I generally like politics, philosophy, interesting facts, history, social issues.

Also, I’m not American if that matters.

What’s your favorite magazines!

To those who live in or who have visited the United States.

Growing up in the 90's, the "minimum acceptable" tip was 10%, average was 15%, and a good tip was 20%. These days, I just round to the nearest dollar and tip 20%, but I've heard these days it's not unusual to tip up to 40%!

What do you usually do?

Given the engineered collapse of USAID and the NIH in the USA, as well as their turning away from WHO support, what are the most likely future scenarios? Can the other developed nations mount a credible pandemic response without the resources of the USA?

I am especially interested in global perspectives because pathogens don’t need passports. How might this impact the global order?

Afaik, archive.md / archive.today used to work but now it doesn't.

Even when browsing while signed in, linkedin will notify them about any person who viewed their profile. I know one can turn on anonymous mode, but still it will notify them.

Does anyone know a way to browse this website without being logged in ?

cross-posted from: https://linux.community/post/2201560

I've received a xiaomi phone as a present, a 2022 redmi 10c 220333QNY, but I've read in several sources that this is a brand that systematically eavesdrops everything the user does. There's also the fear they pass this information to the CCP, which, if you are a Taiwanese, Tibetan, Uighur or Hongkong democracy activist or a foreigner promoting multiparty democracy in China might be used to spy on you and incarcerate you.

Other brands, western if you want to call them that, might do the same, I don't know. That's why I ask these questions:

  • Are all phone brands the same, meaning they all eavesdrop on me and no matter what brand I use some personal information will end up in their servers?

  • If all brands are equally bad, what can a quite ignorant end user like me do to minimize the information transmitted to the manufacturer? I cannot even root this device and last time I tried getting rid of another phone's bloatware I bricked the device.

  • If some brands are better privacy wise, which ones?

  • Am I protecting my privacy if I don't use any default application and disregard any ad to use products from google and use exclusively f-droid?

I don't mind voiding the warranty and I wouldn't mind installing a FOSS OS on this redmi model, as I won't bank or pay taxes using this device, but I don't find anything that works. Suggestions welcomed.
