What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

Looks like FF is on track for enshittification, I (unfortunately and with great sadness) called it last year (and was downvoted for it lol)

That's it, that's enough. The 20% of Netflix content worth watching can easily be found elsewhere, matey.

Cant imagine making 30 k a year and having to pay even 1600 in taxes. This is saying it will increase that much.

I'm not going to deal with this, unsubscribing. I recommend everyone else to do the same, we can't let them get away with this. You can instead donate to an actually good news source, such as ProPublica. And nyt has a bunch of controversies, listed here. I can't support this with a clear conscience.

I usually spend some time on OfferUp looking at things I might be interested in buying used because why not. I am interested in seeing if I can get some Milwaukee Packout cases slightly used for a deal.

Did a search for "Milwaukee" and got more than 14 pages of posts from a single pawn shop. Most of the ads aren't even selling anything they are just the same text on all of them.

WE ARE LOOKING TO BUY TOOLS DEWALT, MILWAUKEE, MAKITA, SNAP ONE, MAC TOOLS, ALL HIGH END BRANDS - USED IN GOOD CONDITION! MESSAGE WHAT U HAVE OR CALL TO DISCUSS XXX-XXX-XXXX

One of the posts was the same item for sale, but posted like 25 times.

Apparently, caps-lock is where it's at. Anyway, if this is not cleaned up by the OfferUp spam patrol, is there another Craigslist / OfferUp that doesn't have this quantity of spam?

This is a new change because not enough people find their VIP features worth the money.

I'll be moving to TMDb instead. And you should know that Trakt would not exist without TMDb open and free database and API.

Bluesky has seen massive growth in the weeks following the US election. As of Tuesday, there are 24 million users on the social media platform. With great engagement comes great responsibility, which means Bluesky CEO Jay Graber has to do a lot to keep her promise to not “enshittify” the platform with ads while still funding its explosive growth.

...

Enshittification, as its known, generally comes as social media platforms expand and need to squeeze money out of users in order to please investors and keep the lights on. Since Bluesky doesn’t plan to run ads, WIRED senior writer Kate Knibbs asked, how does Bluesky plan to make money? “Subscriptions are the first step,” Graber said, referring to a plan to have users pay a regular fee for the ability to upload higher-quality video, for example, or access certain customization features.

Above is one of my 2 year old nephew's favourite channels. He watches them everyday. For his parents who work from home, it's the greatest thing. If an ad comes up, he cries and they know something is up.

However, they are clicking the ok button on the TV far too often per video cause of this.

They run that 90+ sponsored content so frequently it's become crap. I've seen Land Rover ads, the one above is a house, and the most annoying is when they run other cartoons like Thomas the Tank Engine or something. If the kid wanted that, no problem. But right now the singing cats are his jam. Cars, property? Someone is paying actual money to get ads in front of 2 year old kids?

Tell me this isn't a scam.

Has YouTube experienced enshittification?

Do you think Lemmy and other parts of the fediverse will eventually enshittify? I think this would be an interesting discussion to have. There currently is not financial incentive like the ones that have led centralized platforms to enshittify. But there might be in the future. Does decentralization protect against that tendency in some way?

Lemmy and Mastodon do give me the hope, that when one platform turns to shit, there will be people creating a platform that - for the time being - is not.

Among the most significant changes with this year’s Elements releases has little to do with new features but instead concerns the ways users purchase and own the software. While prior versions of Photoshop and Premiere Elements have been lifetime licenses — the user buys the software and then owns it indefinitely — this year’s release has moved to a three-year license term.
