No injuries reported, Slater Street closed between Bank and O'Connor

Parts of three floors and the west wall seem to have fallen or been removed from a downtown Ottawa parking garage overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, a 911 caller noticed damage to a column on one of the pillars in the parking garage that spans from Slater Street to Laurier Avenue W. just west of O'Connor Street, Ottawa Fire Services said in a news release.

By 7 a.m. Wednesday, a piece of the upper west side wall was lying on the ground.

Ottawa police have now closed Slater Street between Bank and O'Connor streets, plus the north side Laurier sidewalk.

They had earlier said vehicles parked inside the parkade cannot be moved until further notice.

A city councillor is pushing the City of Ottawa to suspend all of its accounts on the social media platform X, which she calls "very negative," rife with misinformation and tied to the threat of punishing tariffs against Canada.

Orléans West-Innes Coun. Laura Dudas has given notice of a motion she will make to council's finance and corporate services committee next week. It asks city staff to draw up a plan to suspend the accounts and migrate to other platforms.

In her motion, she said X and owner Elon Musk no longer uphold the values of "transparency, impartiality, respect and accountability," which Dudas views as core principles for the city.

So far, the community is running well without much intervention, I suspect more eyes will be needed as new people come in.

Also, having a francophone would allow the same policy be upheld for both official languages.

As someone who has seen first hand how this teams helped alleviate stress, this just makes me sad.

Housing — denser, taller and cheaper — will be the the hallmark of a revamped Tunney’s Pasture in a plan unveiled by the National Capital Commission at its January board meeting.

The NCC’s federal land use and transaction approval (FLUTA) plan will lead to a “full transformation” of the Tunney’s Pasture property, NCC chairperson Maryse Gaudreault said when the board approved the plan on Jan. 23.

It calls for less office space in keeping with the federal government plan to cut its footprint in the city by 50 per cent, and between 7,000 and 9,000 new housing units, with 1,400 to 1,800 of them to be considered “affordable” under the city’s official plan.

That’s a steep jump from the 3,400 to 3,700 housing units envisioned the last time the NCC’s did a land use plan in 2014. And it’s a staggering reduction in the number of public servants who work at Tunney’s Pasture.

From the frustrations of waiting for a bus that never comes in the suburbs of Ottawa (Riverside South) I went down a rabbit hole of exploring the OC Transpo system, specifically what is causing late busses, why has service gotten so bad, the disastrous line 1 LRT project, and what we can expect in future.

I had no idea this building was so old, let alone so beautiful in its prime. I'd love to bring it back to it's former glory someday.

The Jackson has now slipped back into obscurity. Hard to believe that what is today an anonymous brick block was once one of Ottawa’s best-known addresses. And, that there are still a few stories to be told. Pat King, a key figure in what became the Freedom Convoy protest that paralyzed downtown Ottawa in early 2022, has been found guilty of most charges against him for his role.

Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland is delivering his decision at the Ottawa Courthouse Friday.

King has been found guilty of five charges including mischief, counselling to commit mischief and disobeying a court order.

He's been found not guilty of three charges: intimidation, counselling to commit intimidation and obstructing a public or peace officer.
