Sure, cave just like Mexico and give orange bully more confidence in blackmailing. WCGW?

[–] cygnus 26 points 19 hours ago

Quite the opposite. We and Mexico haven't changed anything at all and it's Trump who looks like the clown he in fact is.

[–] BlameThePeacock 17 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

We really didn't cave on anything, renaming a person that already exists and allocating money towards fighting organized crime (probably from money already allocated to generic policing that was used on organized crime)

Trump can call it a win if he wants, but Trudeau (and Canada) is laughing at him.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

More than laughing. I've seen a lot of anti American sentiment in the past few days. Some businesses preemptively and actively taking US products off the shelves, notably liquor and wine. Some Canadians are still saying they aren't interested in US products or services after this even with the pause. Can't let a bully take an inch. Canadians feel extremely betrayed.

Yes, rightfully so. But trump and his right-wing propaganda outlets will overtly call it a win for the president. Thus confirming his strength to all his supporters of his mastery at negotiating the deal. Meanwhile there are 38 more crisis aflame and he's handling it all swiftly and efficiently (illegally). His fans are only too happy to have all that pesky red tape (rule of law) out of the way. Later when these (self-inflicted and grossly mishandled) issues make life far more difficult for them and everyone, they'll eagerly (and perhaps violently) blame those damn Democrats. These people know fuck-all about politics, trade or social issues and are led around by their fear/hatred which means they are quite easy to manipulate/motivate.

Sorry.

This isn't the end. He's just been pushed off for another 30 days until his next round of ridiculous demands and market chaos. He didn't win much, but neither did we. And we haven't moved anywhere.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 19 hours ago

Nah, Mexico and Canada are just doing things they had already planned to do and telling Trump what he wants to hear. They're just pretending the tariff announcement was part of their decision making so our idiot in chief feels like he did something. He's such a child it hurts me to think about how millions of my fellow Americans are so goddamn stupid that they voted for him. Like, how can I not be angry with people who voted for Trump, they enabled this and it's awful.

Anyways MX & CN are not caving at all, just illustrating how stupid our president and all of this is.

I see this less as caving to the bully and more grown-ups playing with a child. They know they can just nod their heads and play in Trump's fentanyl fairytale land for a phone call, and that gives them a whole extra month for more trade deals that will make them less reliant on the U.S. The only one losing here is Trump, who just looks like a petulant toddler getting played like a rube, but I suspect he's too stupid to see it that way.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 14 hours ago

This, but unfortunately the power dynamic is a little different than a usual grownup-toddler one. This toddler has a world destruction button next to his firefighter truck and could decide to play with that instead at any time something doesnt go his way.

They got nothing new. I'm far from a nationalist, but even I'm ok with strengthening our border with these American sleeze balls at this point. If anything I think Trudeau played him like a fiddle - "sure Donald, we'll give you all this "new" spending to curb fentanyl at the border" literally a non-existent issues and money that's already been spent.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 18 hours ago

What actions, specifically, did we take that you would consider "caving"? Fentanyl trafficked across the Canadian border accounts for 0.2% of US border seizures of fentanyl and, like others have said, we already have a minister who is responsible for monitoring illicit drugs at the border so we would simply be renaming the position.

Additionally, Canadian politicians have been calling for more of a presence at the border for years, so even this would not really be much of a cave considering there's both a federal election and an Ontario election imminent. If we do decide to have CBSA under military command, it would actually help us meet the NATO requirement to spend 2.5% GDP on our military.

No matter what we end up doing, none of it actually involves much work from us that we wouldn't otherwise be doing anyway due to other commitments. So what are we caving on?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 17 hours ago

Pretty sure the auto companies called Trump up and said.. What the FUCK are you doing?

They are the ones poised to come to a complete halt.

Also possible there could be some WTO penalties in the works, considering no one believed US's bullshit about reneging on the free trade deal that Trump signed.
