President Donald Trump claims he's targeting Canada with punishing tariffs on all our goods because he's concerned about the country's supposedly lax approach to fentanyl and migrants.

But new data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) shows Canada has a reason to worry about what's pouring in from the U.S.

There's been an influx of illegal American drugs and guns, which experts and law enforcement say are fuelling crime, death and addiction on this side of the border, too.

CBSA is seizing many more drugs, prohibited weapons and firearms than they were just two years ago, according to figures compiled by the border agency and shared with CBC News.

"Border security" was always a canard. Trump needed to trump up an emergency to levy tariffs without a law going through congress first. If what his deputy chief of staff said yesterday is true and, "[T]he best way to understand President Trumpโ€™s position is to take what he says at face value," then the goal of the tariffs is to cow us into accepting annexation. Failing that, it's certainly at best a shakedown to force us into a bad deal that enriches the US at our expense.

I mean, it's entirely a given considering that he can't even remember the excuse he used the last time he complained. Every week he changes the reason and meanders all over the place. It's not the reason he cares about, it's the profits he things he can get, especially since he doesn't pay an American penny to do so. It's the US public that's paying the entire way since the southern oligarchs are being paid out to cover their losses.
