I still donβt understand how itβs legal to just buy your competition. Like every merger should just be illegal if the two companies are in the same industry.
Because our competition bureau has no teeth.
I am glad to see this. Consumers need MORE of this kind of thing. Punish these businesses that are punishing us.
Maybe a true consumers union someday?
I preferred the first annual steal from Loblaw flyer, but this is also good.

They deserve the notoriety.
I know I'm actively moving from No Frills to Calgary Coop. More expensive but so far way better quality foods and no more dollars going to Loblaws.
And, if they do end up with excess profits, they pay it back to Co-op members.
What stores should we be using as an alternative to loblaws? They own almost everything in my area

It is called βYour Independent Grocerβ. So, pretty much.
That's so deceitful. Loblaw is also one of those cashiers must stand up or die places. When I worked there they banned water bottles at the tills because they looked unprofessional or so they claimed. At the time I attempted malicious compliance by bringing like 6 of the excepted store brand bottles but in hindsight I was just filling myself with micro plastics.
I can't think of any grocers in Canada that provides stools/chairs for their cashiers, have you seen one?
I've never actually verified it myself, but I recall some of the cashiers I worked with before talking about a competitor that had adjustable height tills with what was described as a horizontal fat metal tube bolted on one side of the worker compartment as a seat. I'm not sure how many things in that area that are still the same as back then, apart from the loblaws superstore which I know is still there.
I'll believe it when I see it. Despite there being plenty of options in my area, the parking lots of Loblaw's stores are still overflowing with cars. I was driving around the city yesterday taking care of some errands and I drove past several stores and they were absolutely packed. One even had a lineup of cars to enter the parking lot that was overflowing out onto the road.

Not really. The herd mentality means some people will see a crowd and follow. But since they don't know what's going on, they'll just become an extra customer.

Very, very often as a matter of fact. Have you never gotten curious and decided to check out a place because it was packed to the brim day after day?

I've gone into a grocery store and left after filling up my cart because the line was comically long. Who would ever voluntarily go to a busier grocery store? I wish there were still 24hr grocery options so I could go in the middle of the night when it's quiet.
This might be cultural. But at least in Asia, if there's an unusual sized crowd somewhere, some people will join in just to see what's going on. Sales, festival, public show, etc.
I've worked at one. A lot of people that work there don't have a lot of options, and the shoppers are largely idiots.
Only May? They're barely going to notice it.
I'm betting they instead continue to make record profits all through May.
The only time boycotts work is when they're paired up with divestment and sanctions.
