I have seen a lot of tesla vandalism online the last few days and I'm kind of on the fence about it.

I've seen several examples locally here in BC, Canada.

I think totally warranted at newly purchased teslas going forward. Also it serves as a deterrent for potential future buyers.

But vandalizing a car that is a few years old I think is lame. Those driversare already being punished enough by driving something around that's worth less than scrap.

Writing something in dust is fine and if you think otherwise you're a nerd. Who gives a shit, just wipe it off.

Going beyond that, I wouldn't. What, am I gonna target every car with a Trump sticker too? If you're gonna fuck with cars you should target gas guzzlers, not EVs. I'll absolutely judge someone for owning a cybertruck, but I'd rather let it break down on its own so they blame Musk instead of me.

target every car with a Trump sticker

Yes. Make them afraid to voice their political opinion.

"What are we gonna do? Spray paint every car with a Confederate flag?"

Yes. 00-buck if you got it.

I'd say vandalising a Cybertruck is 100% ok. Or at least 99% ok.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

A person might have bought a Tesla before Elon went full Nazi. Cybertrucks are fair game however.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 hours ago

Mmhmm yes definitely. Felon already has their money. New ones on the lot though?

My hot take? No, it's not

You'll never change a mind with cruelty. You are merely selfishly expressing your anger

Best case scenario, this person now feels bad about buying a Tesla, but is now stuck with the car. They will likely have to waste resources fixing it and it may happen again. Sure, you could assume they're rich and can afford to fix it but that wastes literal resources extracted from our planet to fix or replace the car. And if someone buys the used version they'll have the same problem and may not be quite as rich the next time someone vandalizes the car.

More likely scenario, you piss the owner off and they dig in deeper. That's just how humans work

I am really glad this is the top response. I came in here expecting a very different top comment. Something of encouragement and some bs rationalization about why it's ok.

If it's not your stuff and you don't have permission to touch it there are very few reasons why you should ever touch anything that isn't yours.

Alternatively, you can view vandalization as, essentially, a sin tax. If the person is willing to pay the cost to keep their current setup whatever... but vandalization will provide an economic motive for the victim and others around them to revise their behavior.

Hey, let's just... let the market decide.

I do agree that you're unlikely to make the vandal change their beliefs, but given enough vandalization you'll end up stealing Musk's money.

[–] [email protected] 32 points 9 hours ago

If the person is willing to pay the cost to keep their current setup whatever… but vandalization will provide an economic motive for the victim and others around them to revise their behavior.

Unless you're completely destroying the car beyond repair (thats serious felony material), your vandalism is actually acting to enrich Elon Musk. Where do you think replacement parts for a vandalized Tesla will come from? The victim will be forced to buy those parts from Musk even if they hate him.

Caveat: other than the original Roadster, I've never considered Teslas good cars. The Cybertruck might be the dumbest vehicle made in the last 40 years. SO, on to MY hot take.

I've spent years and years restoring a 1973 Porsche 914 from a bucket to a beautiful driving machine. Blood, sweat, tears, and money. Hard earned money and my own blood, my own sweat, and my own tears.

It's unbelievably pretty now. It looks expensive. It drives like a bat out of hell on rails. It's everything I strived for.

If someone vandalized it, it would be pike gouging at my heart. Writing words in any dust in it would scratch the paint.

With that out of the way, I'd still laugh if I saw a vandalized Swasticar.

You'll never change a mind with cruelty.

You'll never change the mind of the one you are being cruel to. But you might change the minds of some observers.

If you damage a Tesla enough, there's a chance the owner may replace it with another one, resulting in monetary gain for Elon Musk.

So no, don't do it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 hours ago

Only at dealerships

Yes, just like how it is moral to pirate Adobe products

Cybertruck pre-orders started in 2019, well before Musk's bigotry was widely known. It was to be the first ev truck on the market, and the pre-order price was tempting. Folks paid for these things and are now stuck with them. You literally are not allowed to sell them. What should those people do?

Dorkmobile? I thought it was called the wankpanzer, but maybe that's just in my country. Is it even legal in Europe? That thing doesn't look like it passed any crash safety tests AT ALL.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

It isn't. There was a story a few weeks ago of one getting pulled off the streets of england because it was missing required papers for imported cars. I'm rather sure it won't be able to get those papers because it's not considered road safe in europe. Let's go safety regulations and customer protections!

I own a Tesla. I bought it in 2018. I fucking hate Elon Musk but I do not feel like I need to get rid of my car. Me selling would not hurt Elon. It just hurts me because I rely on that car for my wife to get to work.

It's paid off and it works just fine. Why should I have to sell my car for a huge loss and get something new just because you want to make a political statement.

My wife is a life long democrat. I have never had a party affiliation. I do not understand how damaging my car is supposed to help your cause.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 hours ago

Eh, people like me are going to judge you unless you have a bumper sticker. We call all Tesla's "swasticars" in my family. The CEO did two Nazi salutes, and yes... Selling does harm the company.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 10 hours ago (4 children)

In my mind, I put "driving a Tesla" as different than "driving a cybertruck." Two different demographics. I wouldn't laugh at the car, but I would definitely laugh at the truck.

No but I didn't see who did it

[–] [email protected] 59 points 11 hours ago (7 children)

Writing something in dirt is one thing but spray painting, scraping, or damaging something is a dick move.

Yes, they bought a stupid vehicle from a company run by a controversial person, but that doesn't mean you can be a terrible person and damage their property as if they have anything to do with Elon.

You want to go after Elon by proxy? Vote, write your government officials, protest, and continue to not by his products.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I'd argue that giving money to a Nazi is the actual dick move. people reminding you that you're driving a swasticar is actually doing you a solid

That's not vandalism, it's just dust someone wiped off. Come on.

Yes. No chill for Nazis, no chill for Nazi clown cars.

I'd argue how much smearing the dust on a car counts as vandalism. Sure it's something my mom would be mad at me for doing but she's mad at me in general.

[–] ehpolitical 2 points 5 hours ago

I really hope that's not where Canadians are headed with this. Personally, I think it would be tragic to see us and for the world to see us deteriorate into what we hate.
