they wont, because reading as a main mechanic wont reach bro-society

pretty simple

Also: what the good cause catching strays for, damn

it's a small island that feels massive, partly because of its public transport-based fast travel system

Reminder OpenMW is a(n awesome) project with bigger potential than any TES remake. And not a single word about it in this article...

Skywind is also coming along nicely. But Skyblivion will be done this year!

Fuck Bethesda oblivion remake, i trust the modding community a lot more.

Edit: Skywine sounds delicious though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 hours ago

Skywind sounds like something Thor would call his farts.

I can't wait for Skyblivion. I haven't been this excited to pay full price for a game since Fable 2.

OpenMW is effectively a remaster, there’s only so much you can do without redoing the engine and maybe some of the core mechanics for a modern audience which would constitute a true remake.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

OpenMW is literally the recreation of the Gamebryo engine. The goal is to rebuild the engine on modern architecture so you could get the Morrowind experience like it was 20 years ago (with some modern functionality like better draw distance). And you also get the added bonus that some Morrowind mods, like Tamriel Rebuilt are compatible with OpenMW.

You may want a remake but for anyone wanting the OG Morrowind experience OpenMW is probably the best solution.

Tbh I don't want modern Bethesda trying to touch Morrowind, it's beyond their comprehension.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They'd replace the stats with a skill tree.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They'd replace all the things that made Morrowind awesome for something dumbed down for casual player with attention span of week old puppy.

What made Morrowind great was open structure and wonderful narrative. There’s no denying mechanics sucked for a normal person and those other people (;)) can play OpenMW forever. It’d be cool if it was made more accessible for new generations though. Like a comic book holy bible.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, imagine Bethesda remaking Morrowind to mostly corridor walking sim since most side quests and all the optional stuff the game is filled with just cut out. Yeah, I don't like the idea. And that's exactly what I believe Bethesda is capable of.

Maybe what the youth needs is Final Fantasy XIII but with Dunmer stealth rogue archers.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Would that still be Morrowind?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

As much comic book holy bible is a holy bible. It’s an ecumenical matter.

If they were really brave they would try something new

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What was it…star…paddock? Star pasture? Something like that

[–] [email protected] 1 points 22 hours ago

have no idea, looked these terms up, do you mean star stable? some sort of horse owner mmo?

Morrowind was definitely the superior elder scrolls. Want to kill the witch? Sure go east and turn left at the scrawny tree. The entrance is behind the boulder that looks like like a generic boulder. Good luck see, you in a month. Want to know what's at the top of that mushroom tower? Sell half your gear for a levitation potion, fly up and die at the hand of a busy sorcerer whom you bothered in his study. I'm still not fully recovered from the burn after getting that ashlander an egg he suggested I get him. I'm pretty sure that one guard I possess off is still looking for me in Vivec.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 hours ago

I'll never forget the distrust morrowind taught me when, 30 seconds after leaving the starting town, a dude falls out of the sky and dies, and you can loot levitation scrolls that will just as quickly kill you at your current level if you try one. It was immediately trying to trick you into dying, and it was great

I loved Morrowind's vague directions, they felt so authentic - like visiting a small town and getting directions from a local. Even a basic fetch quest felt like a journey since you had to check your journal and follow what the questgiver said or you'd get hopelessly lost.

Navigating by landmarks needs to be in more games. There have been a bunch of games since that let you turn off quest markers and item glows, but without any instructions all that leads to is the player wandering randomly until they stumble upon their destination.

Oblivion may have technically better graphics. But it's ugly. Everything is orange and shiny.

Plus the level scaling is the worst in any game I've ever played, by far. And level scaling is already not a great system.

Morrowind is dated, but still has a great look. The gameplay is tough at first glance, but is the foundation of a great role playing system.

Oblivion needs a remake more.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I don't think Morrowind needs a remake. A remake would likely try to smooth over the game's rough edges, but the rough edges are a big part of what makes the game actually work, imo.

Now, at this point I don't think I trust Bethesda enough to get an Oblivion remake right, either, but Oblivion was very much held back by technological limitations of the time, and in my opinion it hasn't aged very well. I can at least see the potential of an Oblivion remake where they don't have to be concerned about how much they can fit on an Xbox 360 disc.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

Skyblivion is almost there btw, should release this year. Idk why Bethesda would waste their time competing with it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do daggerfall and arena too

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Maybe not for everyone, but I feel like Daggerfall still holds up to scratch the crawler itch. Especially with Daggerfall Unity out there.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

First person dungeon crawlers are my jam but Daggerfall absolutely does not hold up. It'd need a total reconceptualization.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Maybe a good chunk of my opinion on it is due to having grown up with that era of crawlers. Like I said, maybe I'm an odd duck on this one but I still play Daggerfall occasionally to this day. 🤷‍♂️

For those more updated than me, what are your thoughts on Skyblivion and Skywind?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

I think it's one of the best independent art projects/movements of the 21st century. I don't care how long it takes, those folks are not just making a mod, they're developing themselves professionally, collaborating at a high level of sophistication, stewarding a community, and breathing new life into work that should not be forgotten, even though its original creators are willing to let it be forgotten.

Mods. Bethesda would just fuck it up, and the modding community has done a beautiful job with our old love.

We have OpenMW, that is remake enough for me.

[–] SplashJackson 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Ok but when they gonna remake Redguard huh?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Or the Oblivion cell phone port!

(Please don't. It was awful.)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Not in these market conditions XD
